Hurstville, sculpture and mural

The Miles Franklin statue and mural are located on the corner of MacMahon Street and Dora Street, in the southern suburb of Hurstville. Miles Franklin, best known for her classic Australian novel “My Brilliant Career”, lived and worked in the Hurstville area. The mural depicts scenes from her life, including her friendship with famous literary figures of the time including Henry Lawson. Born Stella Maria Sarah Miles Franklin, she used the nom de plume to disguise her gender and increase her chances of being published.

  1. Very nice ensemble of art work. Now I keep wondering -- I can't remember whether I have read "My Brilliant Career" or not!

  2. I like the statue and the mural too. I never read the book, but saw the movie many years ago. Thanks for participating Jim.

  3. Sounds like a real sad story, I hope it was just a novel... The mural and statue sure get more beautiful, "knowing" the background.

  4. Nice mural and statue. Never heard about her and I think that Miles is not really a womens name.

    1. Indeed. She used a nom de plume to disguise her gender and increase her chances of being published.

  5. I love how the mural follows the line of the building. This is a beautiful mural and an equally impressive statue, too.
