Haymarket, The Exchange

The Exchange is a six storey building located along Little Pier Street at Darling Square, in the inner city suburb of Haymarket. It was designed by Japanese architecture firm, Kengo Kuma & Associates and was completed in 2019. Wrapped in over 20 kilometres of timber ribbons, the unique spiral-like building gives the appearance of a hive. Darling Square Library is spread over two floors and a childcare facility spans over two floors. The ground floor houses a food hall, the mezzanine a restaurant and the rooftop has a bar.

  2. I have never heard of an Australian building wrapped in timber ribbons. Who commissioned the design from Japan? and I wonder what their goal was.

  3. A very different building. Looks like a stack of paper plates. I wonder what it is like from the inside looking out.
