Watsons Bay, bench
This inscribed sandstone memorial bench is built into the wall around Robertson Park, near Watsons Bay ferry wharf, in the eastern suburb of Watsons Bay. It was designed by architect Leslie Wilkinson and was erected in 1929. The inscription reads: To commemorate Robert Watson after whom this bay is named. Quarter-Master of HMS Sirius 1786 - 1790, Signal man South Head - 1791 - 1811, Pilot and Harbour Master 1811 - 1816, Superintendent of Macquarie Light House 1818. Died 1st November 1819.
It is interesting that at a time when people were building memorials to the young men lost during the Great War, Watson Boy chose to go back in history. Was there a WW1 shrine already built in the area?
ReplyDeleteThere doesn't seem to be a WW1 Memorial in the suburb but they do have one dedicated to the Boer War, which I have featured.
