Petersham, Eversleigh Hospital

The former Eversleigh Hospital is located on the corner of Addison Road and Coronation Avenue, in the inner west suburb of Petersham. The hospital was established on the site in 1907, when representatives of the Anglican Church in Sydney purchased a large single storey villa named "Eversleigh" c.1876 and opened the "Home of Peace" Hospital for the Dying. From 1913 to 1923, new hospital buildings were constructed including the tower, a small freestanding chapel and the main hospital block. The hospital closed in 1998 and the buildings reused in a residential development.

  2. Unusual design for a hospital. I wonder if it was based on a hospital elsewhere.

  3. It's a nice building. Glad they didn't tear it down.

  4. I worked as a nurse at Eversleigh in the 1980's. At that time it was a leader in the provision of palliative care and the hospice movement modeled on the work of Dr Elizabeth Kubler-Ross. Interestingly it was called 'Home of Peace' as was the hospital established by Dr Ross in California in the 1960's. I consider this experience to have made a significant contribution to my career as a health professional.

    2. Hello. I did my enrolled nurse training at this wonderful hospital in about 1983/4. I met and still remember some of the beautiful people whom I worked with there. I was just thinking of, and often do, of my teacher Sister Eileen Sellers. She was so wonderful as a mentor. I wonder if any one else from there might remember me... or the group I did my training with. Anne Brunskill was one. Bronwyn ?

  5. I did nurses training there also, pts July 1984. We got very solid practical training & Eileen Sellars was a beautiful person & excellent educator. As a young gay man it was a very hard time for me though. It was a very homophibic environment. I believe this changed in later years as they started caring for aids patients.

  6. I also did my Nursing training at Eversleigh Hospital in 86 and it put me in a good position for my Nursing career. I have very fond memories of working there from both staff and patients.

  8. My mum died in that hospital in 1959 after spending quite a long time as a patient (not sure how long as I was only 13 when she died). I wish I could find records but I guess they are long gone.

  9. My grandmother Vivienne Partridge spent her last days in Eversleigh Home of Peace. I was about 7 or 8, if memory is right, (1958) & caught the tram with mum from Earlwood where I grew up to visit her.
