Newington Armory is located at the end of Jamieson Street, in the western suburb of Sydney Olympic Park. The Gunpowder Magazine was constructed in 1897 in the Federation style for the New South Wales Military Forces. It consists of three wide barrel-vaulted store rooms. The building is surrounded by flying buttresses added later, apparently to give extra support to the vaults, and by earthen banks to contain blasts. The site was vacated in 1996 with part of the land redeveloped as the Sydney 2000 Olympics Athlete's Village, now the suburb of Newington. The heritage-listed depot is now used for tourism.
Well suited to its purpose.
ReplyDeleteAn interesting building - unusual construction. You've shared f\Federation style architecture before. We don't see that here, and I'm not sure I'd know how to describe what makes it distinctive.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing at http://image-in-ing.blogspot.com/2020/12/kitty-at-zoo.html
The style has antecedents in the Queen Anne style and Edwardian style of the United Kingdom, combined with other influences like the Arts and Crafts style.
DeleteI hate the thought of guns in Australia, but we all know our colonial history and later. So at least when the Gunpowder Magazine was built (1897) for the military forces, they took very careful protection with the architecture. The barrel-vaulted store rooms were cleverly designed and the earthen banks were well designed to contain blasts.
DeleteYes you can definitely tell it's an armory.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad the buildings are still around. An interesting read, thanks for the link.
