This substation is located along Gray Street, in the southern suburb of Kogarah. St George County Council was once the electricity supplier for this area which was set up in 1922 and had it’s office in Kogarah. In 1979 the organisation was dissolved and Sydney’s electricity services amalgamated to form the Sydney County Council. The substation was built in the art deco style and retains its heritage signage. The houses around it were recently demolished and it will soon be dwarfed by a highrise apartment building.

ReplyDeleteArt Deco style is rare to find these days. Since the houses nearby were demolished, I hope this building remains and is useful.
ReplyDeleteWe have some old substations very similar to this one in my area. I'm glad they haven't taken them down.

I walked past this building today. It’s electricity substation no 10. I wonder how many more there were and if they still exist?
