This wooden honour board set in a glass case within a larger wooden cabinet is located in the Queen Victoria Building. This war memorial lists the names of Australians awarded the Victoria Cross. The cabinet also includes a painting by G. W. Thomas, on loan by permission of Queen Elizabeth II, of Queen Victoria presenting the first Victoria Crosses in London's Hyde Park on 26th June 1857. The model is of a Russian 64pdr cannon, which was captured at Sebastopol in 1854, This was crafted by apprentices from HMA Naval Dockyard, Garden Island, Sydney. It was unveiled on 31 October 1986.

ReplyDeleteWas there nowhere that memorialised Australian Victorian Cross winners until 1986? They deserved this honour board.
ReplyDeleteThere is the Hall of Valour at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra which honours the Victoria Cross and George Cross recipients.

ReplyDeleteA very pretty memorial. Speaking of Canberra, I was asked it I wanted to be transferred to there by my company when I worked at NASA Houston as an Aerospace Engineer. There is/was a satellite tracking station there, it sent astronaut data and vehicle parameters back to us in Houston.
