Redfern, theatre

This former theatre and night club is a heritage listed building which is bounded by Cleveland Street, Walker Street and James Street, in the inner city suburb of Redfern. It was built in 1890 as the Palace Skating Rink. By 1905 it was occupied by Petchell F and Co boot manufacturers. From 1914 it was the Eclipse Printing Company. By 1930 it had become the Empire Picture Theatre and by 1961 was a nightclub known as The Stage Club. It has now been converted to commercial office space. The James Street facade retains its Federation Free Style Classical style but the Cleveland Street facade seen here was modified into a stylised, post-modern interpretation of Art Deco style.

  2. What a history that building has. I especially was attracted to the Art Deco touches.

  3. By 1890 they already understood the need for organised leisure activities. I bet people loved the skating rink.
