Hurstville, Memorial Square

Memorial Square is located along Forest Road, in the southern suburb of Hurstville. The Hurstville War Memorial in the centre of the square was erected in 1922 to commemorate those who died in service or were killed in action during World War One. 'Electricity House' is the office building built in 1939 in the art deco style for the St George County Council, the local area electricity supply utility. It is now home to a branch of the Bank of China.

  1. What is the difference between "died in service" or were "killed in action during World War One"? Are the individuals' names included on the war memorial?

    1. "Killed in action" describes a member of the military who was killed by enemy forces during a battle. "Died in service" refers to when a member dies while serving in the military.

  2. I like the plain lines of this memorial. It doesn't detract from the message.

  3. Interesting building. If I hadn't read "art deco" I wouldn't have thought so, I guess it's been remodeled several times. Yes, roentare makes a good point! Not so much that it's a bank, but China I think. Sad they have to keep adding more wars to the memorial.

    1. I think the current colour scheme is off for art deco. They need to go back to a cream or beige colour to match the brickwork.
