Hyde Park, statue, William Bede Dalley

A lifesize bronze statue of lawyer and member of Parliament, William Bede Dalley sits on the north east corner of Hyde Park, near St James Road. I must admit I'd never heard of him before I discovered this statue and was surprised to see it in such a prominent position in the city.

  1. It is one of those typically self-serving images of civic duty from a hundred years ago. Can you imagine anyone plumping for a statue of Clover? And if so, what sort of statue would represent Clover?

  2. Quite true. I can't imagine anyone trying that these days. If they did, it would probably be something abstract.

  3. A "hyden" treasure? (I know, I know.) Nice statue though.

  4. I have no problem seeing historical figures immortalized. Besides it usually is a nice spot for birds to sit and ....

  5. Isn't it something that as we moved about the world and colonized continents and new worlds, the names of the places we came from naturally followed us? The county that Tampa is in is named for England's Lord Hillsborough. His descendant, then about 7 or 8 years old, visited Florida a few years ago and couldn't believe everything named for his ancestor. We live in the neighborhood called Hyde Park. It is very nice, and one of our oldest. For Tampa that means the homes were all built about 80-90 years ago. For a relatively new city (and sate) that is "historic."
    Your Hyde Park looks great.

  6. It's very trouble-free to find out any matter on web as compared to books, as I found this paragraph at this website.
