The Great Synagogue
The Great Synagogue is located on Elizabeth Street, opposite Hyde Park, and stretches back to Castlereagh Street. This heritage listed building, designed by architect Thomas Rowe in the Victorian Free Gothic architectural style, was consecrated in 1878. We're right in the middle of winter and all the leaves have dropped off the trees, so at this time of year you get an uninterrupted view of some of these great buildings in the city. The Great Synagogue consists of two main sections: the original synagogue, house of worship with ladies’ gallery at the Elizabeth Street end, and a five storey modern section at the Castlereagh Street end.

ReplyDeleteIt is quite gorgeous naked like this. I used to work in a Jewish School and we went there a few times. It is very different inside. If I may be so bold, it is Quaker like inside.
ReplyDeleteGlad to see it, been in several in my life since I am Jewish. Also have seen some good Australian movies lately. One called "The Man who sued God" and another something like Swimming Upstream. Do you know these?
ReplyDeleteI know them well Lee. I really liked Swimming Upstream. I finally caught up with another very good Australian film on the weekend called 'The Black Balloon' which is absolutely brilliant.

ReplyDeleteFor a Melbournian, I am becoming more and more fascinated by 19th century Sydney architecture :). We have the East Melbourne Synagogue still being used here, but it was not quite as grand at The Great, even when it was new in the late 1870s.
