Anzac Bridge

ANZAC Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge over Johnstons Bay between the suburbs of Pyrmont and Rozelle. Anzac Bridge opened in 1995 and replaced the Glebe Island Bridge, an electrically operated swing bridge that operated since 1901. The new bridge had the same name when it opened but it was changed to ANZAC Bridge on Remembrance Day, 11th November 1998, to honour the memory of the soldiers who served in World War I in the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC). An Australian flag flies on the eastern pylon and a New Zealand flag flies on the western pylon. Today is Rememberence Day and Australians pause for a minute of silence at 11am to remember those lives lost in wars.

  2. The bridge should be a great fitting memorial to men of valor and honor. The design all the more give importance to the edifice and the people it is dedicated to. Great shot and very interesting.

    JB, thanks for the visit.

  7. It is a nice looking bridge and aptly named. We have a new bridge, the Karilpa Bridge, nicknamed "Fiddlesticks" but I'm not sure if I like it. I must go and take a pic one day.

  14. Thank you for posting this photo of Anzac Bridge.

I have been looking for a good photo of this bridge for a long time. I know that there are statues of an Australian and a New Zealander at either end of the bridge.

Any chance of photos of them?

  17. Very modern archetural bridge. Wonderful that the New Zealands and Australians remember their fallen in such a way. Today is Veteran's Day here and I enjoyed seeing flags and signs along the road on my way to work. It is important whatever country you are in to remember those who served and are serving our armed forces. Thanks for sharing.

  18. Thanks for all your comments everyone.
BlossomFlowerGirl, I have heard the nickname "Madonna's Bra" used but it's not that common. Not as popular as "The Coathanger" for the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
Frances, yes there are statues of an Australian and a New Zealand soldier on either side of the western approach. I haven't photographed them yet but it's on my 'to do' list.
