Chippendale, flats

The "Strickland Building" is a residential flats and retail building on the corner of Meagher Street and Balfour Street, in the inner city suburb of Chippendale. It is typical of the older style of flats seen in Chippendale. Most of the older residential buildings were restricted to three levels. A former corner shop on the ground floor of this building has been converted into an art gallery. It was designed by R. M. Broderick and built in the early 1900s in the Federation Arts and Crafts architectural style.

  2. Hi Jim
I like the left photo - trees in front, stairs in front, balcony with plant... it has a very lived-in feel... E

  7. Thanks for showcasing these. The architecture of a city is a tangible memory of its past.

  8. This is one of the best photos of your city, I like this place very much, although I can not say if it is because of the architecture or the nice day light.
    Thanks!

  9. Nice photos. Are the flats still comfortable to live in?

  10. Jossie, this area has gone through gentrification in recent years and a lot of these older flats have been restored and renovated. Being so close to the city, they are very popular with people who live an urban lifestyle.

  13. Fishing Guy, that's great. It amazes me sometimes what people like to see or find interesting in photos. I actually was frustrated when the truck driver parked his truck there just as I was about to take that snap but you liked it being there. I'm sometimes unsure about whether people would appreciate photos of simpler subjects like a residential building so am quite surprised when these sorts of posts gather quite a few comments.

  17. It is very exciting to see Australia. It looks like a very homey place and beautiful too. My daughter in law's sister has moved there for a year and loves it. I don't think she will ever move back to the US.

  19. I like the architecture of the flat on the left than the one on the right. Better looking than those I've seen in some eastern suburban flats. You're quite a city traveller Jim to be able to take all these magnificent pictures you shared with us. :)
