Cabramatta, leisure centre

The Cabravale Leisure Centre which opened in 2007 features some very comtemporary architecture. It's named Cabravale because it sits on the border of two western suburbs, Cabramatta and Canley Vale. Officially, it's in the suburb of Cabramatta but it's actually closer to the commercial centre of Canley Vale. The leisure centre features swimming pools, a gymnasium, wellness areas and function rooms. I prefer the architecture I see in older buildings but this sort of modern design catches my attention and I think all that metal looks good against the blue sky.

  1. Very striking architecture. Just when I think I don't like modern, I see something like this.

  7. So very modern yet somehow still inviting. It is hard to get that combo most of the time but here they have done well!
    Thanks for sharing!

  8. I too usually prefer older architecture, but this is very striking.
Am not sure I understand the point of the ladder like structure.

    1. The ladder like structure I believe represent the diving tower that was at the original pool. The two first towers where spring boards. I know because I climbed that tower many a time in my youth.

  10. What a nice challenge to see, metal and sky, wondering who's to be more bright.

    A nice Friday to you.

  11. Do you know or have a guess what the architect/artist meant the ladder to mean? It is quite stunnng anyway and reminds me to some extent of the tall prayer ladders we saw at Sky City New Mexico. They were wooden and primitive, but just the idea of these large ladders going up toward the heavens seems similar somehow.

  14. That blue Summer sky is starting to look quite enticing... I spent all day outside today and had only 5 minutes of partial sunshine... Very stylish architecture. Thanks for the pictures!

  15. This is some great architecture with a lovely blue sky for a backdrop! Your stadium may be smaller, but I'll bet its roof hangs in better than ours does. Then again, yours doesn't have to contend with the weight of snow and all that fun stuff lol

  16. Julie, I found some architectural design award information that tells me that they used recycled aluminium for the exterior.

Mielenkiintoinen "terästä/hopeaa" rakennus. Pelkistettyä arkkitehtuuria, jossa ekoa kasvilla. Mielenkiintoinen kuva. Täällä on talvi ja lunta paljon. Kiitos kommenteistasi blogissani, kurkkaa myös sisarblogiini, allaolevaan osoitteeseen !

  21. Sallie, I’m not sure what the ladders are supposed to symbolise. I've seen a ladder sculpture before at another sport venue, Sydney Olympic Park. That artist said that the ladder in the context of sport suggests the desire to ascend, to scale heights, to climb up, to improve, to achieve, to transcend one's limitations. You can see my post on that here.

  28. The 'ladder' is the tower for the outdoor diving pool that existed below it. The original outdoor Olympic-sized swimming pool and large grandstand was also dug up in the renovation.
