Monterey, monument

This monument is located in Cook Park at Monterey, close to the shore of Botany Bay. It was erected in 1970 to commemorate the Bicentennary of Captain Cook discovering the east coast of Australia on the 29th April 1770, so that makes today the 240th anniversary. The plaque describes this monument as an obelisk, which seems a bit strange to me because I always thought an obelisk had to be a pointed pillar.

  1. It looks like a bird's beak pointing up. I thought an obelisk is a very tall, straight and pointed tower.

  7. So we are coming up for the 250th of that ... 1770 - 2020 ...

And I note we are coming up for the 100th of ANZAC Day. Think I might have to leave the county for that ... gets a bit syrupy for moi. Although I am enjoying 'Kokoda' which wraps up tonight.

  8. Julie, I'm wondering if they'll be making such a big deal of Captain Cook's anniversary as they did back in 1970. I think that times have changed. We know a bit more about earlier explorers to our shores now and more people have different opinions on British settlement following Cook's voyage. So I'm just not sure that people will have the same high regard for Captain Cook in 2020 as they might have had fifty years earlier.

  9. Interesting sculpture. Whenever I see such a monument it gives me pause about the hardships of those early explorers. Today we are fortunate to travel so much easier from place to place.

  10. I'm going crazy, could have sworn I commented on this - definitely looked at it. Haven't been down there since it became Cook and Phillip Park and the walkway was done. Keep meaning to take the camera down one weekend. Imagine its fairly different to the way I remember it.

  11. Ann, the parks and walkways around Botany Bay have certainly changed in recent years. I have often walked along the beach and sections of the walkways through the park. In all that time I hadn't noticed this monument in the park at Monterey until a couple of months ago.

  13. You are right, this is more a pillar than an obelisk, but the monument is nice, original a perfectly located.

  14. Capt.James Cook was a genius, if he was alive to-day he would be off to the Moon.

  15. Artist have their own mind, but people who commission the art should know better. I agree with you about the two sharp points.

  16. Very interesting seeing all the places you come up with. I was just thinging about statues the other day, wondering if the art has died out, as objects of various shapes and sizes are erected nowadays.
    Have a great week.
