Ramsgate Beach, baths

Ramsgate Baths are in the southern suburb of Ramsgate Beach. These timbers and bars are all that remain of the old Ramsgate Baths constructed in 1950 and demolished in 1973. A larger enclosure, incorporated the southern side of these baths in 1975. Most of it was replaced in 1999 by a floating net structure, consisting of plastic tubes and mesh netting, weighed down by chains. This part of Botany Bay has been used for public sea-water bathing since 1924 with the original Ramsgate Baths tidal pool also known as Pemberton's Baths.

  1. Floating net structure? I should probably understand what that means. I love the look of the abandoned structures and kind of hope they plan to leave them there to evoke the history of the area. It's a gorgeous beach.

  3. What a beautiful sight and thought provoking entry of yours, as mankind should indeed take much more care of water and beaches to remain clear. Please have a wonderful Wednesday.

  24. I've seen this beach before. I have a friend on Flickr who has posted a couple pictures of this very spot. I've seen it empty, such as yours, as well as full of sunbathers. Nice picture!

  27. J Bar - I apologize. The Ramsgate Beach photograph I was recalling is very similar to yours; however, it is in England! It isn't Ramsgate either, although there is a Ramsgate in England as well. The beach similar to yours is in Whitstable, England. Here's a couple links to that beach:

This is the one with the sunbathers.

    Sorry for the confusion!

  28. The sand looks whiter than i remember. Is it trucked in?

  29. Linda (PA_shutterbug), no worries and no need to apologise. Our Ramsgate Beach was named after the Ramsgate in England so theconfusion is understandable. Thanks for those links.

diane, the sand at Botany Bay certainly is that white. The whole bay is a lot cleaner than it was a couple of decades ago.

  31. looks nice and warm - hope there's no jelly fish in there

  32. leavesnbloom, I think the nets would keep most of the jellyfish out of there, as well as sharks and stingrays that might venture close to shore.
