Ramsgate Baths are in the southern suburb of Ramsgate Beach. These timbers and bars are all that remain of the old Ramsgate Baths constructed in 1950 and demolished in 1973. A larger enclosure, incorporated the southern side of these baths in 1975. Most of it was replaced in 1999 by a floating net structure, consisting of plastic tubes and mesh netting, weighed down by chains. This part of Botany Bay has been used for public sea-water bathing since 1924 with the original Ramsgate Baths tidal pool also known as Pemberton's Baths.

Floating net structure? I should probably understand what that means. I love the look of the abandoned structures and kind of hope they plan to leave them there to evoke the history of the area. It's a gorgeous beach.

Sallie, the new enclosure consists of floating plastic tubes with nets hanging down to the bay floor, weighed down by chains.

ReplyDeleteI've seen this beach before. I have a friend on Flickr who has posted a couple pictures of this very spot. I've seen it empty, such as yours, as well as full of sunbathers. Nice picture!

ReplyDeleteJ Bar - I apologize. The Ramsgate Beach photograph I was recalling is very similar to yours; however, it is in England! It isn't Ramsgate either, although there is a Ramsgate in England as well. The beach similar to yours is in Whitstable, England. Here's a couple links to that beach:

ReplyDeletediane, the sand at Botany Bay certainly is that white. The whole bay is a lot cleaner than it was a couple of decades ago.
I wonder why they placed a gate on it before. anyway, it's an excellent photo.
