Darlinghurst, court house

The Darlinghurst Court House is located on Oxford Street at Taylor Square, in the inner city suburb of Darlinghurst. This sandstone court house is still used by the New South Wales Supreme Court. The central block, designed by Mortimer Lewis, was built in 1835 in the Greek revival architectural style, with the side wings added in the 1880s. The court house was connected to the old Darlinghurst Gaol, which was located directly behind it, via underground passages.

  1. What a huge court house. Can't imagine the every day drama that unfolds inside that court house. And the sky is so blue, great shot! Happy Friday!

  4. It's very unusual that Mortimer William lewis has used a Greek style building type in a British colonial building, but he was a very competent draftsman and architect and obviously game to experiment.

  7. Have we got ESP or what? I posted a court house as well. It was pouring, so I snapped only the inside, then it was too dark for my camera. My daughter was admitted to bar yesterday, 21st May.

  8. Manang Kim, it's even bigger than what can be seen here. There are a couple more court houses on either end that didn't fit in the shot.

  9. I haven't been inside the compound. Only from the outside which is covered by tall fence.

I have a new Meme blog in lieu to Quadrat in Focus.

Also I saw your picture in Julie's blog during your blog meeting which I hope to attend in the future. Thanks for the mention.

(Relieve to be able to post comment in yours).

  10. I am always surprised to see these buildings ... they seem out of place somehow.

  11. It is always well designed when the police station, the pre-court holding cells, the court and the gaol are all part of the one complex. It cuts down travel time and speeds up the justice system nicely :)
