The 3 Wise Monkeys Pub, George Street

The 3 Wise Monkeys Pub is located in on the corner of George Street and Liverpool Street in a heritage listed, former bank building. The three wise monkey statues (top) above the entrance have been dressed in supporters colours for the Soccer 2010 FIFA World Cup which starts tomorrow in South Africa. From left to right, Speak No Evil barracks for South Korea, See No Evil barracks for Australia and Hear No Evil barracks for England. The building was designed for a bank by Wardell and Vernon Architects in the Victorian Italianate style and built in 1886. It was originally the 'Southern Branch' of The Bank of Australia which then became The Bank of Australasia from 1879, the ANZ bank from 1970 to 1998 and was finally turned into a pub in 2000.

  3. That's a good one.

Football is a simple game; 22 men chase a ball for 90 minutes and at the end, the Germans win.

  5. A lovely old building adorned with the three monkeys, which would be a great statue at the best of times, but even more colorful with the football finery.

  6. Funny dressing up of the monkeys. The WK-fever is everywhere in the world visible.

  7. This is one of my favourite statues in central Sydney. Banks in the 19th century commanded high profile corner positions, and today it is fun to check out the remodelling that has occurred.

  8. Great monkey shot - good to see a bank turned into a pub and not the other way around.

  9. That's a fun shot. Of those three, I've got to cheer for South Korea, since that's where my wife is from, or England, where I'm from. Sorry to all you Australians reading this comment!

  10. Andrew, I wondered that too. I assumed it might have something to do with which teams the managers of the pub are supporting. Apart from Australia, maybe they have English and Korean backgrounds or connections.

  13. I was given in the Gold Coast a 3 wise frogs T shirt. I asked why not monkeys. They say, no natural monkeys in Oz. but plenty of frogs. I must tell them about your pub.
