Cockatoo island, Biennale, ferry

The Royale, Regal and Proclaim are restored deck timber ferries that provided free ferry services between the art exhibitions during the 17th Biennale of Sydney. The services ran between Pier 2 at Walsh Bay, the Commissioner's Steps at Circular Quay and Cockatoo Island.

  1. Interesting that a former prison colony has been turned into a center for the arts. That seems appropriate somehow. It reminds me of Alcatraz island in San Francisco Bay. Since it was closed as a prison it has been designated a historic site which precludes it being used for much other than a set for prison movies.

  7. Siromade, the island is in Sydney Harbour, so it's a short trip from the city. If you look closely, you can see the Harbour Bridge in the background.

Photo Cache, the ferry service was sponsored and only free during the art exhibition. There are regular ferry services here from Circular Quay.

  8. Fascinating ferry style! And red too! Surprising colour for a ferry! But the best part must be it is a free ride! Great shot!

  13. Nice promotional tool to offer the free rides, but from what you've been posting, J Bar, if I were anywhere close I'd go anyway, free or not. That's a lovely ferry and you captured it well.

  21. Bonnie Bonsai, there's a lot of exhibits on the island and there's heaps to see there besides those. You could easily spend a whole day out there when a festival or exhibit is on.
