Cockatoo Island, Biennale, Inopportune:Stage One

The former Turbine Hall at Cockatoo Island made an ideal space for the 17th Biennale of Sydney artworks. Inopportune:Stage One was created by artist Cai Guo-Caing in 2004 and has been displayed in a number of contemporary art museums overseas. The art installation features a cascade of nine cars with sequenced multichannel light tubes of varying lengths to simulate a car bombing.

  1. I find out at Cockatoo Island, Jim, that how things are staged or nearly more important than what the art is. I love the size of the old industrial buildings. Quite overwhelming for insignificant little human-beans!!

  2. Quite true, Julie. I'd never been to Cockatoo Island before last weekend and was more impressed by the location than some of the exhibits themsleves. This particular work, in this location, impressed me the most.

  9. The artist must find it hard to get venues big enough. One would have been enough. I don't know I could appreciate a car bombing in any form.

  10. Now there's two phrases that I never expected to see in the same sentence. 'Car bombing' and 'art'. I'm still having trouble connecting the two. Evidence of my poor imagination, I guess.

  13. I wouldn't have guessed those were tubes of light. It's kind of weird they want to simulate a car bombing. The art sure drew my attention, though.

  18. Very interesting. I am still trying to understand contemporary art. There are such a viriety of ways that artists express themselves.

  19. J Bar~ Thank you for visiting us over at The Santos Times and for your comment. We recently saw this art exhibit in Seattle, WA. Very interesting...For some reason though, I think I would have liked it had a more "artsy" car been used.

  20. I just read that the art exhibit was to simulate a car bombing...The way it was displayed in Seattle, it looked as if it was to represent a car accident. I guess it doesn't matter what car it is if it is a bomb...scary.

  22. Denise, it really is an amazing coincidence. I had no idea that this artwork was also a permanent exhibit in Seattle. I thought that they were moving the original to various art exhibitions around the world.
