The Man O'War Steps and jetties are located on the western end of Farm Cove and the Royal Botanic Gardens. The stone jetty and steps were reconstructed in 1973 when the adjacent Sydney Opera House was built on Bennelong Point, from where this photo was taken. The floating Man O'War West Jetty and Man O'War East Jetty which were added later are used by water taxis. The original stone jetty and steps were constructed for the movement military stores and personnel to and from a ship called the Man O'War, anchored nearby in Sydney Harbour. According to a plaque here: the Man O'War Steps served as a landing and embarkation point for men of the British and Australian Fleets in peace and war for 150 years.

Francisca, I was standing on the steps leading up to the Sydney Opera House for this shot. The reason there are no boats here is that these jetties are only used by water taxis or vessels that need to make a booking. I'll add this info to the post.

Looks as if this jetty has been refurbished! When I saw it years ago it was crumbling! And it looks great now!

ReplyDeleteEwok, the jetties aren't used for regular ferry services. They can be used by water taxis but other vessels need a prior booking. Circular Quay ferry wharf is just around the corner for all the public services.

ReplyDeleteAnn, you need to consider that there is likely to be a King Charles in line to the throne before King William. More Australians are in favour of a republic than are not. Even more would be in favour of becoming a republic after the reign of Queen Elizabeth. I'm more than ready now.
