Sydney Airport, Terminal Control Unit

The Sydney Airport Terminal Control Unit at Mascot sits close to the runways which jut into Botany Bay, alongside the old airport control tower that operated from 1972. The old tower was designed and built by government departments in an era of entrenched bureaucracy. The engineers did not consult with the air traffic controllers, so it was not tall enough and views were unsatisfactory. It was replaced by the current Sydney Airport Control Tower in 1996 which is functionally and technologically better.

  3. For a minute I thought that was window-washing equipment, which could be a good thing at the airport.

  4. Good story - not tall enough - minor problem!

  5. So does that mean the tower wasn't tall enough when I took my then teenage brother in and out of Sydney Airport in 1982? I'm glad my mother never knew. Or perhaps this isn't the international airport? Perhaps this is for domestic flights? Still, I'd think it wasn't tall enough.

  6. Kay, the old tower was used for the domestic and international airport. It can be quite interesting (and sometimes freaky) what you find out when you start researching these things.

  10. A very nicely proportioned building. It looks good, pity it didn't work. The newer one is absurd and looks very dated already.
