Prince Alfred Park, Oh Alfred!

Prince Alfred Park is a park in the inner city suburb of Surry Hills which is currently being redeveloped. The hoardings around the development site have been decorated with artwork by artists and the community. It is part of the Art and About Sydney festival, in a project titled 'Oh Alfred! Reflections of Prince Alfred Park'. This sculpture by John Doe and Lachlan McGuiness celebrates the power of wind as a source of energy and is inspired by new environmental initiatives being installed in the park.

  1. Unusual piece of art. Not sure if poor Alfred would have liked it.

  2. Looks good; is that a lifesaver indulging in a bath to the left?

  3. Peter, they put these up about a month ago and I think they may leave them there until they finish rebuilding the pool. There's heaps more along Chalmers Street which I couldn't photograph as well because the sun was directly behind them.

Jayne, yes that lifesaver is indeed indulging in a bath, complete with a few rubber duckies.

  4. Is there a connection between the power of wind and the bath/ducky thing?!?!?!

    Happy travels!!

  6. Red Nomad OZ, good question. I think it has something to do with using wind power to pump water and heat water, but I can't be sure.

  10. One golden gear - must be the special one. Interesting art - if not what I'd expect to find in a park.

  11. This post has me laughing. My father-in-law's name was Alfred and the title of the artwork -- I can just hear in my m-i-l's voice. "Oh, Alfred." Sweet old memories.

The sculpture itself is interesting and unusual -- again, Sydney triumphs!
