Surry Hills, library and community centre

The Surry Hills Library and Community Centre is located on Crown Street, opposite Shannon Reserve. This iconic building, which was completed in 2009. features a high standard of design and sustainability. The southern facade is all glass, providing high levels of natural lighting throughout the building. The pedestrian mall and nature strip has been created by blocking off Collins Street to Crown Street.

  3. you are showing me sights that I am completely unfamiliar with and I love it. the light that reaches the inside of this building must be amazing. I'm reminded a bit though of what happened with one of our brand new hospitals here. all windows and the women at the reception desk and check-ins cannot even see their computer screens for the bright sunshine coming through the glass. they are miserable! go figure, the best laid plans, right? I still love it in spite. thanks for sharing, and have a really great weekend.

  7. This unusual library is an amazing piece of architecture, and the reflections of the clouds are amazing. I am not a real fan of seriously modern buildings, but I really do like this one. I think it would be wonderful inside.

  12. Miss Becky, I think the clever thing they did here was to have the glass facade on the southern wall which gets practically no direct sunlight. The eastern side has a louvre facade which moves and follows the sun to control internal glare and heat. I'll try and get a shot of the building from that angle for a future post.

  13. Wow I haven't dropped by in a while and look what I almost missed. This is such an amazing building. Really suits the vibe of Surry Hills I think as it's become so much more sophisticated since I moved to Sydney in 1989. Pruxxx
