Customs House Square, Sydney Ice Bear

Sydney Ice Bear was an ice sculpture of a male polar bear that was located in Customs House Square this week. British sculptor Mark Coreth carved out the life-sized melting ice sculpture of a polar bear on Friday (top). By Monday, the sculpture had melted away to reveal a bronze skeleton (bottom). The display was timed to coincide with World Environment Day on Sunday, as a metaphor for the human impact on our environment and to create awareness of climate change. This is the sixth Ice Bear Project carving following on from those in London, Copenhagen, Montreal, Toronto and Manchester.

  1. Wow. What a beautiful idea-- it does make an impact. I admire artists who do temporary work, like ice sculptors and sand sculptors. It seems like it would be so difficult to see your hard work melt or wash away.

  9. Even with our current chilly snap I bet our bear melted a lot faster than any of those other cities.

  10. It seems so cruel to leave them out in the sun, don’t you think?

    Have an ice day, Boonie

  12. Boonie S, it does seems like a bit of a shame to lose these works of art so quickly.
