This folly or rotunda is located in the grounds of Oatlands House, in the north western suburb of Oatlands. A folly is an extravagant decorative structure designed more for artistic expression than practicality. The wrought iron lacework on top looks brilliant against a blue sky.

ReplyDeleteI never think of follies in terms of the Australian experience. But you are right of course. The open rotunda serves no practical purpose and simply looks great.

ReplyDeleteWhen I was young, and gobbling English novels, I always wanted to have a folly. This one is beautiful but, of course, impractical.
ReplyDeleteThe rounded veranda on the house in your previous post is much more practical, as the place is now being used for functions, but I must admit I still have a soft spot for a folly, especially as seen against the sky.

ReplyDeleteI've never heard of a folly before but it's very pretty with it's decorative ironwork - I guess it dosen't have to serve any purpose other than to be appealing to the eye.
