Iron Cove Bridge

The Iron Cove Bridge crosses Iron Cove and links the inner west suburbs of Rozelle and Drummoyne. The old truss span bridge which opened in 1955 is obscured here by the new duplicated concrete box girder bridge which opened in 2011. They are bathed in the golden glow of sunset.

  3. This looks very much like the design of a couple of our bridges over here Jim, wonder if it was the same person that designed both. Hmmm will have to do some research!

  8. The new bridge is certainly more design friendly unlike the old one which was functional but reminded me of a horizontal step ladder!

  10. The shadow seem to be clinging to the underside of the bridge. Shy things, aren't they?

    IF I WERE A SHADOW

    If I were a shadow,
    I would seek the light;
    There I would glow sleekly,
    Black and shiny bright!

  11. Lovely sweep of curving shadow on the new bridge which of course is very serviceable but I still like the old one best,

  14. I have read about this bridge and the pluses and minuses of its very existence. Shall have to go out there and see for myself. I wonder if it can be reached by ferry ... perhaps not.

  15. Julie, there once was a ferry wharf on the eastern side of the truss span bridge at Birkenhead Point but services were discontinued only last year due to low passenger numbers.

  19. when I see a bridge like this, my mind goes back to the Brisbane floods when boats were just trapped at the columns.

  21. Could you tell me when the 5th lane was added? Thank you, John.

  22. John, sorry, I have no idea when the 5th lane was added on the Iron Cove bridge. There doesn't seem to be much info on the internet about the history of some of these bridges in Sydney.
