Waverley Cemetery is located in St Thomas Street, in the eastern suburb of Bronte. This is one of the more prominent monuments close to the cliff, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The first interment took place here in 1877.

50 000 graves. That is a bit bigger than anything in my area. I like that it is so close to the ocean.
ReplyDeleteSteffe, it certainly is quite a scenic resting place. This cemetery is also used as a setting for a lot of movies and television series.
ReplyDeleteThere is something serene about having our eternal resting place next to the ocean. Especially for Australians, I suspect, because we try to live our lives in THIS world by the sea.

ReplyDeleteJim, last Sunday I took shots of this very same memorial. I will go out again in a few weeks, but later in the afternoon this time, so the sun is behind me. I will also get off the bus earlier so that I start over the top, but on the OTHER side. I get very sidetracked in cemeteries, and just wander. Must be organised. Must be organised.

ReplyDeleteLovely pic of a lovely angel. I like the ship's wheel, too. A broken wheel is used as a symbol of the break in the wheel of life, but that appears intact. Which suggests they were probably a captain or otherwise connected with the sea.
