Bronte, Waverley Cemetery

Waverley Cemetery is located in St Thomas Street, in the eastern suburb of Bronte. This is one of the more prominent monuments close to the cliff, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The first interment took place here in 1877.

  1. I believe you've had photos before of cemeteries by the sea...they're quite beautiful...the photos and the cemeteries!

  3. You and Julie are on the same page today Jim, both wonderful views of this amazing cemetery. Overlooking the ocean wouldn't be a bad resting place I think!

  6. 50 000 graves. That is a bit bigger than anything in my area. I like that it is so close to the ocean.

  7. Steffe, it certainly is quite a scenic resting place. This cemetery is also used as a setting for a lot of movies and television series.

  8. There is something serene about having our eternal resting place next to the ocean. Especially for Australians, I suspect, because we try to live our lives in THIS world by the sea.

  9. Those fresh sea breezes must still be good for the souls.

  12. We have very similar statuary in Mt. View Cemetery. I should post a comparison photo.

  15. Jim, last Sunday I took shots of this very same memorial. I will go out again in a few weeks, but later in the afternoon this time, so the sun is behind me. I will also get off the bus earlier so that I start over the top, but on the OTHER side. I get very sidetracked in cemeteries, and just wander. Must be organised. Must be organised.

  16. It seems that Waverly Cemetery is a Taphophile oasis! Lovely sculpture with a gorgeous background.

  17. Lovely pic of a lovely angel. I like the ship's wheel, too. A broken wheel is used as a symbol of the break in the wheel of life, but that appears intact. Which suggests they were probably a captain or otherwise connected with the sea.

  18. Gene, I was fascinated by that wheel monument too and I framed this photo to include that in.
