Paddington, Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Saint Sophia

The Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Saint Sophia is located along South Dowling Street, in the inner city suburb of Paddington. This heritage listed building, built in 1925 in the Academic Classical architectural style, is also known as The Cathedral of God's Wisdom - St Sophia. It has direct historical links with the political division of the Greek Orthodox Church, which occurred during the 1920s which has since been resolved.

  3. Very serene building and surrounds. Was it used as a parish church, do you know?

    1. When the Greek Orthodox Church split in the 1920s, this church was built as the main church of the breakaway group, the Greek Orthodox Community. So it was a parish church and still is since the groups united under the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia.

  6. That is an imposing structure, made all the more so by the leafless trees out front. A great array of shadows!

  17. Mr. Demetrios Anthony Mylonas was born on the Greek island Samos, and in the year 1910, travelled to Australia at a very young age together with his mother Sophie. (Σοφούλα) He was a talented and educated artist of theological paintings and chanted in the men's church choir. As a philanthropist he supported in many ways the Greek immigrants upon their arrival and was merciful to the numerous people in need even through the Great Depression. Every Easter the church commity asked him to carry the Cross of Christ the 'Epitaph' to honour him. In the year 1937, he was awarded with a gold decoration by the Hellenic King, King George II. Yes, it was by grandfather whom built Saint Sophias Cathedral at Paddington. Thank you very kindly.
