Parramatta, St Patrick's Cathedral

St Patrick's Cathedral is located on the corner of Marist Place and Victoria Road, in the western suburb of Parramatta. This heritage listed Catholic church was designed by James Houison and built in 1853 in the Victorian Gothic stone church reusing stone and many elements of an earlier church on the site. The tower and spire were added to the church in 1878 and 1883. The church was demolished and rebuilt in 1936 and again in 1996 after it was gutted by fire.

  3. It hardly seems possible that with all the destruction wrought on the cathedral, it indeed arose again. A testament to faith I'd say! The new stone house of worship looks as it may have in earlier phases of its life, in stone it is a mighty statement to all with a message of 'never lose hope'...

  6. This church is certainly the phoenix legend in action. The church now looks a little like a mini chateau. Beautiful.

  9. Excellent photo!

I would love an old photo of the cathedral from before the renovations. How much was retained from 1853 and 1877? And which elements were added or changed before WW2?

    1. It seems that the tower and spire survived both of the recent demolitions and rebuilding, in tact.
