Coogee, The Impressionists' Seat

This view of Coogee Beach is from Dunningham Reserve, in the eastern suburb of Coogee. "The Impressionists' Seat" is a sculpture created by Eileen Slarke in 2005. It depicts famous Australian impressionist artists Arthur Streeton, Charles Conder and Tom Roberts, who painted coastal scenes of Sydney in the late 1800s. Conder’s Coogee Bay and Roberts’s Holiday sketch at Coogee, were painted on the same day of the 1888 Easter weekend from this headland looking over the sweep of the bay. Streeton's Sunny South Coogee Bay (2) was a painting from 1890 of the same iconic view.

    1. It's actually quite tall and high on that plinth so I think it's not really intended for people to sit on.

  3. No-one could ask for a better location than that seat by the sea Jim.

  4. I may be wrong, but the seat looks as if it faces away from the sea. So if it is sat on, then you would not see the view. A great deterrent not to actually sit on it. Love the symbolism of the shapes. An interesting sculpture.

    1. It might be a bit of an optical illusion but it definitely faces towards the beautiful view. I will try and photograph it again, back the other way, when I have he chance.
