Woolloomooloo, Harry's Cafe De Wheels (Theme Day: Take Away Shop)

Harry's Cafe De Wheels is located along Cowper Wharf Road, in the inner city suburb of Woolloomooloo. Sitting on the shore of Woolloomooloo Bay, near the Garden Island naval dockyard, this take away shop is an iconic Sydney landmark which now also has a number of franchises around the city and suburbs. The meat pies, sausage rolls, pasties and hot dogs on the menu are a popular part of the city's nightlife. Harry's Cafe De Wheels was originally a caravan cafĂ© operated by Harry Edwards in the 1930s. "Harry's Tiger" is the signature dish which consists of a chunky lean beef pie topped with mushy peas, mash potato and gravy.

  7. How clever of Harry Edwards to create Harry's Cafe De Wheels from a caravan in the 1930s. Did the City Council approve its usage 80 years ago?

    1. I had a couple of shots at lunch time when the tables and stools were packed but this was later in the afternoon when it was quieter. The busiest time is at night and on weekends.

  10. This is a perfect choice for the take-away theme. Now I have to write Woolloomooloo, just because it is about the coolest place name I have encountered.

  12. I wouldn't mind having a hot dog there, sitting on one of the stools and perusing the photos.

    1. It does open at 8.30 in the morning and the coffee may go well with a bacon and egg roll (a very Aussie breakfast).

  18. WoW!!! Harry's has certainly changed. I was in the Navy from 1978 - 1990 & I remember the original caravan being there. Heading back to Garden Island from a night on the town, a Pie & Peas at Harry's was just about a mandatory Naval regulation meal. Been looking though lots of your Wooloomooloo posts & I can't believe how much it has all changed. I remember the Finger Wharf in it's old condition.
