The Rocks, shop and residence
This heritage listed shop and residence is located on the corner of Cumberland Street and at The Rocks. It was designed by Walter Liberty Vernon and built in 1912 in the Classic Free Style Edwardian architectural style. It had not changed much until 1966, when some changes were proposed by the then owner, the Maritime Services Board. It was restored in 1996 and has been used as a shop and residence again since.

ReplyDeleteScience House is another significant heritage building in that area. It was opened in 1931 as a co-operative venture between three major scientific organisations. I will try and photograph this building soon.

I really like this architectural style !!
ReplyDeleteI really do not like the lumpen nature of this building, but note the Victorian terraces come right up to the corner shop's wall. It is really important that we keep all architectural styles in place, to track architectural history.

DeleteGood to hear it is being loved but it may gradually be dwarfed by its neighbours.
ReplyDeleteCorner structures often provide some the most interesting architectural solutions. Glad to see this building has been restored and not reinvented.
