This fence is located along Nicholson Street, blocking off traffic into the pedestrian mall in Forbes Street, in the inner city suburb of Woolloomooloo. The preserved sandstone pillars and fence once surrounded the port facilities at Woolloomooloo Bay.

ReplyDeleteIts a great fence, but I am most impressed by the name of the town. I'm wondering if children are taught a little rhyme to learn how to spell it. Here in the U.S. some children were taught how to spell Mississippi with a little rhyme ---when they got the the S's it was "crooked letter crooked letter." I'm wondering if there is any significance to the fact that it has the words "wool" "moo" and "loo" in it?

The name of the suburb is derived from an aboriginal word. The way people remember to spell it is using the words: "wool" "loo" "moo" "loo". There's a fun artwork in Woolloomooloo that used road signs with images of a "sheep", "toilet", "cow", "toilet", which I featured here.

ReplyDeleteSometimes they just install bollards at the entrances to these pedestrian malls but often there is nothing. Such a high fence is unusual but the trees and plants disguise it somewhat.
