Rosebery, St. Joseph's Catholic Church

St. Joseph's Catholic Church is located along Rosebery Avenue between Morley Avenue and Kimberley Grove, in the eastern suburb of Rosebery. This heritage listed, two storey church was built in 1929 in the Inter-War Romanesque architectural style.

    1. So many. Probably only rivalled by the number of pubs.

    2. Would I be right in guessing that there's at least one church with its own pub? ;)

  4. Jim, so interesting how the church just decreases in size as it goes up the hill. Nice picture.

  5. Too bad they have such an ugly fence around such a beautiful church! I'll b et if you're in the inside int he late afternoon, that round window would have some great light coming through it.

    1. Yes, I don't think I've seen a cyclone fence around a church anywhere else around Sydney. I agree it detracts from the beauty of the church.

  6. That's a lot of crosses on one church :) But I like the simple design.

  7. I think that the only time I have seen a cyclone fence round a church - usually Catholic - is when there is a primary school in the grounds. The round window is especially enchanting.

    1. Gemma, that would explain it, since there is a school at this site.

  12. Jim,
Why is there a chain-link fence, is it to keep folks out or in? Tom The Backroads Traveller

  18. I must say that, apart from the rather nice rose window, it doesn't look much like a church. And is the fence designed to keep non-RCs out, or the congregation in?
