Newtown, school

The former Newtown Primary School is on the corner of King Street and Newman Street, in the inner city suburb of Newtown. It was designed by George Allen Mansfield as a two storey Victorian Free Gothic building in 1875, with later additions in 1892 and a three storey tower at the main entrance in 1921. It is now part of the Newtown High School of the Performing Arts. A war memorial, located just outside the school, was erected in memory of all former pupils of Newtown Primary School who served in the First World War.

  3. It looks to me to be so formal for a primary school!

  4. Very beautiful! The trees, although hiding the building are adding to the beauty of the setting.

  5. That doesn't look like any school around here. Lovely building.

  6. I am so glad the war memorial is located just next the school. Too often children who grew up and went to war were remembered only by their parents and siblings. In this case, the entire school is remembering them.

  7. I bet those shadows are welcome to allow some coolness into the building!

  8. Why couldn’t I have gone to school in a building like this? I think it is lovely it is being used for the School for the Performing Arts. It is so pretty and I notice some hidden shadows of the fencing.

  9. A lovely style of architecture but it was the roof that caught my eye as its so different from the slate roofs I'm used to seeing.
