Rookwood, Elephant House

This pavilion, originally known as the Anglican Rest House and later renamed the Ornamental Rest House, is located in Rookwood Necropolis, the cemetery in the western suburb of Rookwood. It was built in 1878 in the Victorian style near the former railway station. Later, staff nicknamed it the Elephant House because it looked like the original Indian Elephant House at Taronga Zoo.

  1. I agree, it does look like an Elephant House, reminds me of the one at Auckland Zoo

  5. I wonder if someone gets to live in the elephant house. I could be pretty nifty.
But, how would it work? I mean, would half of it be home and the other side storage? Or, two cozy little homes with a drive through in the middle? - Guess I'll get to look these questions up, hm?? It's a GREAT photo. Got me wondering and imagining. - Unusual, quirky, Brightly painted bit of joy. Thank you!

    1. Since it is located in the middle of a cemetery, I don't think anyone would want to live there.
