This is one of four gates on the Pyrmont Bridge, a swing bridge over Cockle Bay in Darling Harbour. The bridge was designed by Percy Allan and opened to traffic in 1902. It was one of the largest spanning swing bridges in the world and one of the first to be powered by electricity. It was closed to traffic in the 1984 when freeways south of Cockle Bay were built but was restored and reopened as a pedestrian bridge with the redevelopment of Darling Harbour in 1988. The swing bridge opens for tall ships and yachts and the gates keep pedestrians back from the opening. This view features the Sydney Convention Centre, Star of the Show Ferris Wheel, the Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour Hotel and the Harbourside shopping centre.

ReplyDeleteCockle Bay in Darling Harbour... that sounds so like fairy tale places! The photo in the link is so futuristic, like a space-age city! I've never seen a swing bridge, only drawbridges, and none of those for years.
