Liverpool, monument and lamp

This unique war memorial that features an old street lamp is located on the corner of Macquarie Street and Memorial Avenue at Liverpool. It commemorates Australia's involvement in the Boer War and a local soldier who died in the conflict at Bloemfontein, South Africa.

This statue in the grounds of St Lukes Anglican Church, in the south western suburb of Liverpool, is of a Winged Ox which is a symbol of St Luke.

Liverpool, St Lukes Anglican Church

St Lukes Anglican Church is located at the corner of Northumberland Street and Elizabeth Drive, in the western suburb of Liverpool. This church claims to be the oldest Anglican church in Australia. It was designed by convict architect Francis Greenway in the Georgian architectural style and completed in 1819.

Rockdale railway station, dust storm (Skywatch Friday)

On Wednesday morning an eerie orange-red glare covered Sydney's sky, caused by the worst dust storm in 70 years. Strong winds carried the iron-rich dust from the dry outback interior to the east coast, creating a orange-red haze. Dust storms are more common in the desert and outback but this was a very unusual sight for Sydney. The photos above were taken at Rockdale railway station around 6.45am, on my way to work. The photos below were taken from the same location on Thursday afternoon, on my way home from work. What a difference a day makes.

Liverpool, Lighthorse Park

Lighthorse Park beside the Georges River, in the south western suburb of Liverpool. It features a war memorial dedicated to the Australian Light Horse Brigade, which were mounted troops with characteristics of both cavalry and mounted infantry, who served in the Second Boer War and World War I. The concrete pillar, engraved with two Light Horsemen and a Light Horseman’s slouch hat, was unveiled on 11 November 1988. The park also contains a restored steam engine produced by Marshall, Sons & Co.

This wharf is on the western bank of the Georges River, beside Lighthorse Park, in the south western suburb of Liverpool. A flock of ducks flying past, across the river, can be seen here.

Liverpool shops

This pedestrian mall in Macquarie Street (above), takes up part of the main street of south-western suburb of Liverpool. It runs between Moore Street and Elizabeth Drive. The Westfield shopping centre was also extended on Macquarie Street (below) and on Northumberland Street, to now cover three blocks.

Liverpool, war memorial

The Liverpool District War Memorial stands in the middle of Bigge Park, in the southwestern suburb of Liverpool. It was originally erected in 1951 to commemorate those who have served in conflicts in which Australia has been involved along. The pool of remembrance is on two levels with a small waterfall in the middle. In the high section of the pool is a large pile of bush rocks with a white cross at the top, symbolising a battlefield grave with a cairn of stones (Australian bush rocks), a rough cross and a serviceman's hat. In the lower section there is a single large bush rock.

Liverpool, TAFE College

Liverpool College features a number of heritage buildings designed by the convict architect Francis Greenway that were previously used as hospital facilities. Over the years these facilities have been used for different purposes and known as the Colonial Medical Service Hospital, Benevolent Asylum, Government Asylum, State Hospital and Asylum, before becoming a Technical and Further Education (TAFE) college.

St James Anglican Church

St James Anglican Church in King Street is the oldest church building in Sydney. The church was designed in the Old Colonial Regency style by convict architect Francis Greenway and has been in continuous use from its consecration in 1824. I was trying to get here early enough to capture the whole church bathed in morning sunlight but not early enough to avoid the shadows from nearby office blocks; perhaps it’s still the wrong time of year to avoid those. This was my last chance to photograph the church before the scaffolding went up for some restoration work. The copper on the spire is being replaced and it will be a very long time before it obtains that corroded green look again.

Coogee, rocks

The waves seen crashing here on the rocks are on the northern side of Coogee Beach, beside a rock pool, in the eastern suburb of Coogee. The Coogee Surf Life Saving Club is perched at the top of the cliff at the southern end of the beach.

Spring Flowers at David Jones department store

I had to share a few more of the displays at David Jones, Elizabeth Street Department Store since they are featuring Australian native flowers.

Spring has arrived in Sydney and many shopping centres, department stores and boutiques are celebrating with a burst of Spring flowers. David Jones department store in the city maintains a tradition of filling its store with magnificent flower displays and this year they have embraced an Australian native flowers theme.

Voyager Point

Voyager Point is one of the newer suburbs of Sydney, which was established in 1987. The suburb takes its name from the commemorative park which was established here to remember the loss of 82 naval personnel from the destroyer HMAS Voyager which collided with the aircraft carrier HMAS Melbourne in February 1964. Voyager Point contains many large new homes often cynically referred to as McMansions (left). The water reservoir at nearby Pleasure Point (right) marks a stark contrast on the horizon.

This footbridge over the Georges River connects the southwestern suburb of East Hills with Voyager Point. The sky was so blue with just a hint of a cloud creeping in.

Voyager Point, The Sanctuary

The Sanctuary is a reserve beside the Georges River at Voyagers Point. It's such a shame that they've gone to the effort to create a beautiful little reserve like this but it has been vandalised with graffiti.

The Georges River National Park is along the northern foreshore of the Georges River. These homes amongst the bushland are at Picnic Point (left) and at Sandy Point (right) on the opposite southern side of the Georges River.

Chullora, recycling centre (Theme Day: Big)

This big bicycle located at the front entrance of the Waste and Recycling Centre, in the western suburb of Chullora, is made of recycled bits and pieces. That's cycling and recycling. The Bicycle is a sculpture built by John Ridley, Andy Lugiz and Phillip Becker.
