Marrickville, police station

This heritage listed building is the former police station in Gladstone Street, in the inner west suburb of Marrickville. This brick building with a sandstone front and slate roof was built in 1896 at a cost of 2,369 pounds. In the early days, it was known as the Marrickville Lock-Up and consisted of six cells, a padded cell, three yards, an Officer in Charge's office, a muster room and a store room. It remained in use until 1997 when a new police station opened in Despointes Street. This building is now the May Murray Neighbourhood Centre which provides community services.

  1. So typical of the Brit concept of frontier policing. Boom & Gary of the Vermilon River, Canada.

  2. Who was Mr. Gladstone? We have a primary school named after him here. He must be the same person.

  3. Ann, they both could have been named after William Gladstone, a British Prime Minister. Many streets in the suburbs are named after former residents and Gladstone is a fairly common name.

  8. Funny you say that! A lovely Greek lady use to bake ginger biscuits for my uncle who was a Police Officer there. She nicknamed him "The Headmaster" because he had no hair and she couldn't say his name properly. He was Lancelot Mason. Which was not his real name..he made it up because he liked that name but she just kept calling him the Headmaster. Then he married herand she still called him "The Headmaster"
