Waterloo, mural

This mural of a motorbike is on the roller door of a workshop which builds custom motorcycles, located along Bourke Street, in the inner city suburb of Waterloo.

Mays Hill, cemetery

 
Mays Hill Cemetery is located along the Great Western Highway in the western suburb of Mays Hill. This cemetery is made up of two distinct cemeteries appropriated for the Presbyterians and Baptists of the Parramatta area in 1839 and 1849 respectively.

Barrack Street, art

These art installations on lamp posts are along Barrack Street as temporary public artworks created in response to the Covid-19 pandemic to enliven civic spaces. "Giant Badges" was created by Adam Norton and features a series of slogans in the form of giant badges. The badges have an immediate sense of nostalgia to them, but their bright, pop construction placed in the present city centre creates new twisted meanings.

Kurnell, wharf

This former ferry wharf is on the shore of Botany Bay, in the southern suburb of Kurnell. A passenger ferry service operated between Kurnell and La Perouse from 1890 to 1974. Ferry services ceased following severe damage to both wharves after a major storm event. After some repairs, it is now used as a viewing platform. New wharves are currently under construction for a ferry service to resume.

Marrickville, house

This heritage listed building is located along Victoria Road in the inner west suburb of Marrickville. It was built in 1864 as a house for Robert Koll, a German migrant who established a tannery on this site. Scottish migrant John Vicars had established a successful woollen manufacturing business in Sydney and in 1894 his sons developed a new mill on this site. When the Vicars family took possession of the house, it was occupied by the families of William Vicars and Robert Vicars and became known as "The Mill House". The factory closed in the 1970s and the site was redeveloped in the 1980s into the Marrickville Metro Shopping Centre with the external walls preserved. The house was conserved and repaired to become the Centre Management Office.

Alexandria, mural

This mural is on the side of an office building along Bowden Street, in the inner city suburb of Alexandria. It was created by street artist Fintan Magee in 2015 when this former warehouse was redeveloped.

Matraville, Pioneer Memorial Park, First Fleeters Memorial

The First Fleeters Memorial is in Pioneer Memorial Park, which is part of the Eastern Suburbs Memorial Park, in the eastern suburb of Matraville. It was installed here in 2016 to commemorate twelve First Fleeters reinterred here with eleven granite panels on the perimeter etched with the ships’ names, each listing the names of those who sailed with the First Fleet. This statue is of Admiral Arthur Phillip, first Governor of New South Wales who led the British settlement and colonisation of Australia. The greyhound at his feet named Chara, was one of the greyhounds who came aboard the First Fleet ships and used in the new colony to hunt game.

This couple has arrived at Bronte Beach, in the eastern suburb of Bronte. The man is preoccupied by his mobile phone to notice the beauty of the Pacific Ocean behind him as the sunbaking woman takes in the view.

Bronte, baths

Bronte Baths are located at the southern end of Bronte Beach, in the eastern suburb of Bronte. Rough waves and dangerous currents forced the beach and this tidal pool to be closed yesterday, as a lifeguard looks in.

Kensington, church hall

Jubilee Hall is a church hall for Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church, located along Roma Avenue in the eastern suburb of Kensington. The adjacent heritage listed church was built in 1906, with the original hall on the right built in the Federation style. The extension on the left was built much later.

Glebe, lamp

 
This lamp is part of the Jubilee Fountain, located on the corner of Glebe Point Road and Broadway, in the inner city suburb of Glebe. This drinking fountain was erected in 1909 to commemorate the golden jubilee of Glebe as a municipality. This  bronze coach light is surmounted on a sandstone column with Corinthian capital and ring banding with a floral motif.

Centennial Park, Column Garden

These flowers and shrubs surrounding palm trees are in the Column Garden in Centennial Park, in the eastern suburbs. The garden is named for two, nine metre high Corinthian sandstone columns which support the statues "Sunrise" and "Sunset".

A couple of swimmers in the calm waters of Bronte Baths at the southern end of Bronte Beach, as the rough surf pounds Nelson Bay in the eastern suburb of Bronte.

Kensington, terrace houses

These terrace houses are located along Doncaster Avenue in the eastern suburb of Kensington. The historic building is located near Randwick Racecourse and was refurbished and redeveloped in 2016 as part of an apartment complex after adjacent stables were demolished.

Darling Point, yacht club

The Cruising Yacht Club of Australia is located on the shore of Rushcutters Bay, in the eastern suburb of Darling Point. The club is home to the annual Sydney Hobart Yacht Race which begins nearby on Sydney Harbour on Boxing Day.

Wolli Creek, walkway

This footbridge from the entrance to Cahill Park in the southern suburb of Wolli Creek, carries a shared walkway and bike track over the Cooks River to the inner west suburb of Tempe. The former utilities bridge was redeveloped in 2014, to provide a safer crossing away from the road lanes on the Tempe Cooks River Bridge beside it.

Wolli Creek, Cahill Park

 This barbecue area is located in Cahill Park, in the southern suburb of Wolli Creek. It has great views of the Cooks River to the Giovanni Brunetti Bridge and Sydney International Airport. A fluoro orange share bike has been abandoned here.

Sandringham, seagulls

 These three seagulls are perched on the fence along the walkway beside Sandringham Baths on Botany Bay, in the southern suburb of Sandringham.

Darling Harbour, Christmas Baubles

These giant Christmas baubles were floating on Cockle Bay near Pyrmont Bridge at Darling Harbour.

Queen Victoria Building, Christmas Lights

This view of the Queen Victoria Building is from the corner of Park Street and George Street. The Druitt Street facade features a Christmas light installation made up of more than 7000 bulbs.

Bronte Beach (Theme Day: Photo of the Year)

Bronte Beach is a popular beach in the eastern suburb of Bronte. The signs declare that the beach is closed to swimmers due to rough conditions but life guards keep watch on surfers. The swimmers sunbaking on the sand were swimming in the nearby Bronte Baths. I featured a similar photo during the year which was taken minutes earlier and can be seen here.
