Darlinghurst, sign

 

A number of heritage listed buildings along Oxford Street, in the inner city suburb of Darlinghurst, are currently being redeveloped. The hoardings around these buildings have been decorated with rainbow colours and murals which tell the history of the LGBTIQA+ community in this area. This sign features Flags of Importance including the Rainbow flag, the Australian Aboriginal flag and Torres Strait Islander flag.

Myer, Mardi Gras Festival

 
The Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Festival is running from 16 February to Sunday 3 March 2024. To celebrate, these rainbow flag displays have been installed on the ground floor of the flagship Myer department store.

Chippendale, Central Park, Halo

 "Halo" is a wind activated kinetic sculpture in the middle of Chippendale Green, along O'Connor Street, in the inner city suburb of Chippendale. The giant yellow ring measuring 12 metres in diameter is attached to a 6 metre long silver arm, which pivots off-centre atop a 13 metre high tilted silver pole. It was created in 2012 by Jennifer Turpin and Michaelie Crawford.

400 George Street, mural

 
This is part of a mural located along a wall of a courtyard on level four of an office building at 400 George Street. It is a collaboration by street artists Mike Makatron, Conrad Bizjak and Phibs. Another part can be seen here.

The Rocks, Suez Canal, sculpture

This is one of the life-size caricatures located in a narrow laneway known as Suez Canal, at The Rocks. Constructed in the late 19th century, this laneway runs between George Street and Harrington Street, with the name supposedly a pun on "sewers canal". These backlit sculptures glow at night and depict the people who frequented the area in the late 19th century who were involved in prostitution, slavery and opium.

Circular Quay, catamaran

 
The Riverside Avalon is a 24 metre catamaran ferry which is often seen cruising around Sydney Harbour. It is seen here arriving at the Circular Quay ferry wharves, in front of the Bennelong Apartments and Opera Residences.

St James Anglican Church, Queens Square

These summer flowers are in Queens Square, on the corner of St James Road and Macquarie Street. St James Anglican Church is a heritage listed church designed by convict architect Francis Greenway in the Old Colonial Regency style. It is the oldest church building in Sydney and has been in continuous use from its consecration in 1824.

Haymarket, Mountbatten Hotel

The Mountbatten Hotel is a heritage listed pub on the corner of George Street and Ultimo Road, in the inner city suburb of Haymarket. The three storey section on the corner was built in the 1880s in the Victorian Italianate style as the Mansion House Hotel. The two storey extension along George Street was built in 1914 in the Federation Free Classical style.

Haymarket, KMT Building

The KMT Building is a commercial building located along Ultimo Road, in the inner city suburb of Haymarket. It was built in 1921 as the headquarters of the now defunct Chinese Nationalist Party of Australia (CNPA) or KuoMinTang (KMT), which supported the overthrow of the monarchy and the establishment of a republican government in China. The building also housed the Chinese Times newspaer from 1922-1949. It now houses the Chinese Ginseng and Herbs Co on the ground floor and office space above.

Haymarket, Lunar New Year, paifang

This paifang, also known as a pailou, is a traditional style of Chinese architectural arch or gateway structure which has been installed to celebrate the Sydney Lunar New Year Festival. It stands along George Street, at the end of Campbell Street, beside the Capitol Square Hotel.

George Street, mural

'Peace Waratah' is a giant mural on the side of an office block at 309 George Street. The artwork was created by artist and activist Shepard Fairey in 2017. It is 44 metres high and 28 metres wide and features a beatific female with flowers in her hair, the waratah which is the floral emblem of New South Wales and the word "Obey" in an optimistic kind of way.

This taxi rank is located along the elevated roadway on level three of the Overseas Passenger Terminal at Circular Quay.

Circular Quay, Queen Elizabeth

 

The Queen Elizabeth is a luxury ocean liner which was berthed at the Overseas Passenger Terminal at Circular Quay. Some workmen can be seen here on a cherry picker, painting the hull of the cruise ship. Bennelong Apartments and Opera Residences can be seen in the distance.

This artwork has been installed along Liverpool Lane, in the World Square shopping centre. The neon light mirror wall features a dragon for Lunar New Year to celebrate the Year of the Dragon.

Meriton Suites are serviced apartments located on the corner of Pitt Street and Bathurst Street. This 51 storey building was built in 2004.

Haymarket, substation

The Belmore Park Substation is bounded by Campbell Street, Pitt Street and Hay Street, in the inner city suburb of Haymarket. The substation building was completed in 2014 and consists of three basement levels, ground floor plus five floors above. The west façade is clad in steel panelling with a pattern which resembles a printed circuit board.

Newtown, shops and flats

This is part of the facade of a commercial and residential building on the corner of King Street and Wilson Street, in the inner city suburb of Newtown. The heritage listed building built in the Victorian style, once housed a branch of RH Gordon & Co, a retailer of home furnishings. The ground floor has a number of shops and restaurants with flats on the first and second floors.

Camperdown, University of Sydney, Womens College

The Women's College is a residential college on the University of Sydney campus, in the inner city suburb of Camperdown. The building was designed by John Sulman and Joseph Porter Power and built in 1894 in the Federation Free architectural style. The Williams Wing was built in 1936 and then the Reid Wing was added in 1958. The Langley Wing and the Menzies Common Room were completed in 1969.

The Rocks, art

This mural is located on the side of a shop along Atherden Street, near Playfair Street at The Rocks. It was created in 2018 by international artist Kelsey Montague.

Rockdale, Gujaga Park, sculpture

This sculpture is located in Gujaga Park, in the southern suburb of Rockdale. It features depictions of The Lifecycle of the Frog: Eggs, Tadpole, Tadpole with two legs, Froglet, Adult Frog. The other nature sculptures can be seen here and here.

Sydney Olympic Park, Newington Armory Wharf

A Sydney RiverCats class of catamaran operating on the Parramatta River from Parramatta to Circular Quay is passing Newington Armory Wharf, in the western suburb of Sydney Olympic Park.

Barangaroo, Sunset Sessions

"Sunset Sessions" was a pop-up bar located beside Watermans Cove in the inner city suburb of Barangaroo. It featured a bar and DJ in a double decker bus with picnic tables and deck chairs on the terrace.

This former corner shop with residence above is located on the corner of Henderson Road and Wyndham Street, in the inner city suburb of Alexandria. The shop has now also been converted to residential.
