Newtown, mural

This mural has been painted on the side wall of a shoe shop, on the corner of King Street and  Church Street, in the inner city suburb of Newtown. The mural promotes the Dr. Martens brand of shoe, commonly known as Doc Martens, which is a popular choice of footwear in the inner city. The artwork was created by street artist Sindy Sinn.

Walsh Bay, sculpture

'M-Forty Two' by James Parrettimer is a sculpture located at Walsh Bay wharves at Dawes Point. It is part of the 2022 Walsh Bay Sculpture Walk, run by ArtPark Australia, which is exhibiting contemporary landmark sculpture in public spaces.

Darling Harbour Marina

Looking across Darling Harbour Marina at Cockle Bay Wharf to the Sydney Convention Centre and the Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour Hotel. Three waiters walking along the wharf are delivering food from a restaurant at Cockle Bay Wharf to one of the luxury cruisers moored here.

Barangaroo, Crown Sydney

Crown Sydney is a skyscraper in the inner city suburb of Barangaroo. The building was designed by WilkinsonEyre and completed in 2020 and mainly comprises of a hotel, casino and residential apartments. It stands at 75 floors, making it the tallest building in Sydney and fourth tallest building in Australia. This view is from the boardwalk at Watermans Cove.

Chippendale, Central Park Mall

Central Park Mall is bounded by Broadway, Chippendale Way, Central Park Avenue and Carlton Street, in the inner city suburb of Chippendale. This shopping centre on six levels features fashion and lifestyle boutiques, supermarkets, eateries, cinemas and an outdoor space. One Central Park are the two apartment buildings which tower above. The vertical gardens were a collaboration between French botanist Patrick Blanc and the architects Ateliers Jean Nouvel. The native Australian plants, flowers and vines stretch over 50 metres high, making it the world's tallest vertical garden.

Pyrmont, sculpture

 

This metallic sculpture is part of a group of artworks located at the entrance to Pyrmont Bay light rail station along Murray Street, in the inner city suburb of Pyrmont. The one above the entrance can be seen here.

Millers Point, laneway

 

Looking into a split level laneway from Argyle Place, in the inner city suburb of Millers Point. The upper side is High Lane and the lower side is Argyle Lane. The heritage listed shops and residences along Argyle Place are built in the Federation style. In the distance is the Highgate Apartments building.

Hurstville, mural

This mural has been painted on an underground car park air vent and fire stairs of an office building, on the corner of MacMahon Street and Dora Street, in the southern suburb of Hurstville. The vibrant artwork features native Australian flowers and bees. It was created in 2020 by artist Mandy Schoene-Salter, also known as MAN.De. The mural extends to the other side of the structure which can be seen here.

Walsh Bay, marina

A view of the marina at Pier 7 on Walsh Bay, in the inner city suburb of Dawes Point. The warehouses and wharves at Walsh Bay were once part of Sydney's port facilities but have been converted to apartments. Residents moor their boats here.

Millers Point, Dalgety's Bond Stores

Dalgety's Bond Stores are located along Munn Street, in the inner city suburb of Millers Point. The heritage-listed former warehouse complex was built in 1875 in the Free Classical style, providing storage space for the nearby shipyards. The steep fall of the site reveals three more storeys below, addressing Hickson Road adjacent to the wharf. The warehouses were redeveloped in the 1970s and are now used for commercial office space.

Bond Street, payphone

 
This payphone is located at the corner of Bond Street and Pitt Street. The sign on the lamp post is for the green cycleway behind it in Pitt Street. On the other side of the street is a Bank of Sydney branch and post boxes. This a regular payphone with an orange rooftop as opposed to a wi-fi payphone with a pink rooftop. Since 2021, Telstra's public payphones now provide free local and national calls to standard fixed line numbers and calls to standard Australian mobile phones.

Curtin Place, sculpture

This sculpture is located in Curtin Place, down the stairs from George Street, between Australia Square and the new A by Adina Hotel. This part of the laneway is restricted to pedestrians only. "OPEN SPACE!" was created in 2021 by Emily Floyd, an artist and senior lecturer in Monash University’s Department of Fine Art.

Customs Square

The City of Sydney creates vibrant floral displays around the city and inner city suburbs every year in Spring. These flowers are located at Customs Square, in front of Customs House near Circular Quay.

Newtown, mural

This mural is on the wall of the telephone exchange along King Street, in the inner city suburb of Newtown. "We Have The Dreaming" was created in 2014 by indigenous artist Blak Douglas. "The Dreaming" or "Dreamtime" is the Aboriginal understanding of the world, its creation and its great stories.

Rozelle, artwork

This functional artwork was a fence of a commercial building located along Robert Street, in the inner west suburb of Rozelle. The words cut into the rusted metal refer to local landmarks: White Bay, Balmain, Darling Street, Mullens Street, Robert Street. It has recently been replaced but I don't know if the artwork has been relocated and preserved.

Alexandria, Sydney Park, pond

 
This viewing platform looks across a pond in Sydney Park, a large recreational area in the inner city suburb of Alexandria. The former brickworks here have been transformed into parkland and wetlands.

North Cronulla, tower and sign

The lifeguard observation tower overlooking North Cronulla Beach, one of the beaches in the southern suburb of Cronulla. It was recently relocated, after weeks of rain and wild weather had severely eroded the beach. The huge swells battered the shoreline and had left the tower dangerously close to falling into the ocean.

Theatre Royal, sculpture

"Mercator" is a geometrically precise hanging sculpture in the lobby of the Theatre Royal, designed by American Charles Perry for the opening of the theatre in 1976. It was commissioned by the Harry Seidler, who designed the the theatre and surrounding MLC Centre skyscraper. It was taken down in the 1990s when it was considered unsafe but returned in 2021 after the theatre was refurbished. The ribbed lobby ceiling was designed by Italian concrete engineer Pier Luigi Nervi.

Haymarket, Market City

 
Market City is located along Hay Street, in the inner city suburb of Haymarket. This complex contains a produce and flea market known as Paddy's Markets on the ground floor, the Market City shopping centre on three levels above, and a skyscraper apartment building called The Peak. The Vegetable Market building was built in 1909 in the Edwardian style with the façade was preserved and restored in the 1980 redevelopment. A tram has just departed here from the Paddy's Markets Light Rail Stop, which is on the Central to Dulwich Hill line of the Sydney Light Rail Network.

Barangaroo, Whale Tales

A final look at "Whale Tales", the art trail event featuring 30 whale tail sculptures installed around Sydney Harbour from Barangaroo to Cockle Bay, Darling Harbour and Blackwattle Bay. The artwork created by 30 different artists will be auctioned to raise money for The Kids’ Cancer Project. These sculptures were located at Barangaroo Reserve and Wulgul Wak at Crown Sydney.

Pyrmont Bridge, gate

This is one of four gates on the Pyrmont Bridge, a swing bridge over Cockle Bay in Darling Harbour. The bridge was designed by Percy Allan and opened to traffic in 1902. It was one of the largest spanning swing bridges in the world and one of the first to be powered by electricity. It was closed to traffic in the 1984 when freeways south of Cockle Bay were built but was restored and reopened as a pedestrian bridge with the redevelopment of Darling Harbour in 1988. The swing bridge opens for tall ships and yachts and the gates keep pedestrians back from the opening. This view features the Sydney Convention Centre, the Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour Hotel, Star of the Show Ferris Wheel and the Harbourside shopping centre.

Walsh Bay, anchor

 
This anchor is displayed as a memorial on Towns Place Wharf opposite Pier 9 on Walsh Bay at Millers Point. The plaque reads: Build Anchor from HMAS Sydney (IV) Pennant Number FFG03 Hull Number FFG35. Donated by the Department of Defence and placed in the City of Sydney by the NSW Government and Precinct Association to recognise the service of the Officers and Sailors from all the ships with the proud name HMAS Sydney.

Arncliffe, payphone

 
This payphone is located along Firth Street, in the southern suburb of Arncliffe. It is located near the railway station entrance and bus stop shelters, opposite the main street shops. The raised pedestrian crossing behind it is known as a wombat crossing and the speed limit is reduced to 40km/h in this shopping area.

Herald Square, sculpture

 

This sculpture is part of The Tank Stream Fountain in Herald Square, on the corner of George Street and Alfred Street near Circular Quay. The bronze fountain was created by Stephen Walker and presented to the City of Sydney in 1981.

The inscription reads: The tank stream fountain and the landscaping of this square were donated to the City of Sydney for the pleasure and enjoyment of citizens and visitors by John Fairfax & Sons limited, proprietors of the Sydney Morning Herald to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the first publication of The Sydney Herald on April 18, 1831. The right Hon. the Lord Mayor of Sydney, Alderman Douglas W. Sutherland, A.M., accepted the gift on behalf of citizens on April 16, 1981. J.O. Fairfax, Chairman, John Fairfax Limited L.P. Carter, O.B.E., Town Clerk

Cockle Bay Wharf, Whale Tales

Woolloomooloo, Eastern Distributor

This view of the toll booths on the Eastern Distributor motorway is from the Domain. The footbridge links The Domain with the inner city suburb of Woolloomooloo. This photo was taken twelve years ago but I thought I would show it now since the booths have been removed and the footbridge is currently being repaired. The railway bridge carries the Eastern Suburbs Line between Martin Place and Kings Cross.

Cockatoo Island, camping (Theme Day: Rest, Sleep and Relaxation)

Cockatoo Island is the largest island in Sydney Harbour, located at the junction of the Parramatta River and the Lane Cove River. It has been the site of a prison, reformatory, industrial school and shipyard. The heavy industry ceased in 1992 when the shipyard closed and ten years later it became a major venue for art exhibitions and festivals. Visitors can stay at this camping site along the foreshore.
