This cannon barrel stands as a monument in Cook Park on the shore of the Georges River. It is located near the mouth of the river at Botany Bay, in the southern suburb of Sans Souci. The barrel came from the HMS Wolverine, flagship of the Australian Squadron 1876-1881. HMS Wolverine was built at Woolwich dock, England in 1863 as a three masted steam corvette with 21 guns and a flush deck. When it arrived in Sydney it served as a training ship for the naval brigade. It was sold off in 1895 and when it became unseaworthy ended up in Auckland, New Zealand. It was dismantled at Brick Bay, later renamed Stanley Bay.

Sandringham, baths
Sandringham Baths are located on the shore of Botany Bay, in the southern suburb of Sandringham. The weather has started to cool now that Autumn has arrived and there weren't any swimmers here late in the afternoon as this seagull kept watch. This area had been known as Stripper's Point in the 1830s, from the local occupation of tree-felling and bark-stripping. Luckily the name was changed to Sandringham by William Rust, an ardent royalist who built the Prince of Wales Hotel here in the 1870s to honour Edward VII, the Prince of Wales, who in 1872 was also building a royal residence at Sandringham, in Norfolk, England.

Croydon Park, pub
The Croydon Park Hotel is located along Georges River Road, in the inner west suburb of Croydon Park. It is typical of the style of classic old pub that you see out in the suburbs. While many of these types of pubs have closed, been redeveloped or replaced by larger venues over the years, it's good to see that many have survived too.

Pyrmont, Life From A Suitcase
'Life From A Suitcase' is a sculpture that is located in the inner city suburb of Pyrmont. This life size, cast bronze sculpture was created by Terrance Plowright and unveiled in 2010. It was originally commissioned by Paul Signorelli to represent three generations of his family. It was gifted to Australia as a celebration of immigration. It is located at Pyrmont Wharves 12 and 13 which was Sydney's reserve passenger terminal until 1994 and where many immigrants in the 1950s and 1960s first stood on Australian soil. Immigrant Biaggio Signorelli, from Sicily in Italy, landed here in 1954 as did his wife to be, Filipa in 1963. They raised a large dynamic family that went on to grow Doltone House, a collection of event venues around Sydney including one here in the redeveloped wharf building behind the sculpture. Today is Harmony Day, which celebrates the cohesive and inclusive nature of Australia and promotes the benefits of cultural diversity. It is celebrated annually on the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

Surry Hills, stack
This chimney stack rises above a former industrial building in the inner city suburb of Surry Hills. It dominates the skyline behind Shannon Reserve and is much taller than the chimney stacks on the residential terrace houses beside it. Surry Hills is a suburb that once contained a lot of heavy industry and manufacturing but has gone through gentrificaton, with many of the old buildings redeveloped. This stack is redundant now since the building is used for residential and commercial purposes.

Gladesville Bridge
Gladesville Bridge carries Victoria Road over the Parramatta River, between the suburbs of Drummoyne and Huntleys Point. Gladesville Bridge is a four-box pre-stressed concrete arch with a span of 305 metres. When it opened in 1964 it was the longest reinforced concrete arch span in the world. This bridge replaced an old two lane swing span iron bridge that had been built in 1881, which itself had replaced a ferry service that ran across the river. The new bridge was originally designed with six lanes but was expanded to eight lanes in the 1970s. This view is from the Gladesville Bridge Marina, located beside Five Dock Point at Drummoyne.

Powerhouse Museum, The 80s Are Back
An interactive, electronic, giant Rubik's Cube. |
'The 80s Are Back' is an exhibition currently on display at the Powerhouse Museum at Ultimo. This exhibition, which explores Australian life and culture in the 1980s, has been one of the most popular and longest running in the museum's history. The fascination for this decade remains with a revival of much of its culture in recent years, that has lasted longer than the decade itself. It was a great nostalgic trip, revisiting styles and trends from the 1980s and their effect on music, film, television, fashion and design.
