Newtown, school

The former Newtown Primary School is on the corner of King Street and Newman Street, in the inner city suburb of Newtown. It was designed by George Allen Mansfield as a two storey Victorian Free Gothic building in 1875, with later additions in 1892 and a three storey tower at the main entrance in 1921. It is now part of the Newtown High School of the Performing Arts. A war memorial, located just outside the school, was erected in memory of all former pupils of Newtown Primary School who served in the First World War.

Haymarket, Memory Lines

Memory Lines or the Australian Workers Memorial is located in Reflection Park near the Sydney Entertainment Centre, in the inner city suburb of Haymarket. This 4.5 metre sculpture was designed by Ingrid Skirka and is made from bronze, steel and cement. It is a memorial dedicated to those workers who lost their lives in the workplace.

Ultimo, Dalgety Woolstores warehouse

The former Dalgety Woolstores is bounded by Wattle Street, William Henry Street and Jones Street, in the inner city suburb of Ultimo. It was built in 1895 in the Federation architectural style. An extensive fire in 1990 destroyed the timber internal structure. The building was refurbished in 1992 as two separate apartment developments with a concrete internal structure.

Ultimo, Farmers and Graziers warehouse

The former Farmers and Graziers No.1 woolstore is located along Wattle Street, in the inner city suburb of Ultimo. It was built in 1895 in the Federation architectural style. To expand the capacity, the Farmers and Graziers No.2 warehouse was built around the corner of Macarthur Street in Jones Street in 1935. This heritage listed building was converted to apartments and retail space in the 1990s.

Circular Quay, fast ferry

This fast ferry is waiting at the Circular Quay ferry wharves with the Sydney Opera House in the background. Manly Fast Ferry is a privately owned company which provides ferry services from the northern beaches suburb of Manly to Circular Quay and Darling Harbour.

Loftus Street, monument and flag

This sandstone plinth with a flagpole is located along Loftus Street, outside Customs House and opposite Jessie Street Gardens at Circular Quay. The plinth contains a plaque unveiled on the 26th January 1988 to commemorate the bicentenary of the founding of the colony of New South Wales while the flagpole flies the Union Jack flag. The plaque reads: This Flag Mast Was Erected To Commemorate The Location At Which The First Ceremony of Saluting The Flag By Captain Arthur Phillip R.N. And His Company Took Place To Mark The Foundation Of Australia On 26th January 1788. I chose to show this photo today because it is Australia Day, which celebrates this event.

Enmore, street art

This graffiti tag is on the wall around a warehouse located on the corner of Gladstone Street and Phillip Street, in the inner west suburb of Enmore. The owners have allowed graffiti to be applied here since 2006 and artwork keeps changing. This wall on the corner currently features a graffiti tag by "Bones". The area also features other street art such as this black plaster cast of a television and video cassette recorder with the word "obsolescence" embossed on the screen, installed on the footpath in front of the wall.

Darling Point, Sea's Nest

"Sea's Nest" is a sculpture in Yarranabbe Park on the shore of Rushcutters Bay, in the eastern suburb of Darling Point. It was designed by Zhang Yangen and in 2012 featured in the Sculpture By The Sea outdoor sculpture exhibition. It was installed in this park in 2015 by the local council.

Woolwich, theatre

The Hunters Hill Theatre is located along Margaret Street, in the lower north shore suburb of Woolwich. The heritage-listed building was originally St John's Anglican Church, designed by Cyril Blacket and built in 1908 in the Victorian Free Gothic architectural style. The Hunters Hill Theatre began in 1930 and staged productions in various locations including the Town Hall, church halls and little Stables Theatre. In 1978 they found a permanent home in the timber church hall behind St John's until 1993 when it was destroyed by a fire lit by vandals. In 1995, it took over the deconsecrated St John's Church.

Circular Quay

This view of Circular Quay is from the Overseas Passenger Terminal, as a couple of ferries at the ferry wharves. This was taken a while ago when a crane had been brought in to refurbish the wharves. The city skyline rises above Circular Quay railway station and the elevated Cahill Expressway above it.

The Galeries, Wrapped

This structure is part of the "Wrapped" display suspended above centre court of The Galeries shopping centre, in the Citigroup Centre. It was created for Christmas as a tribute to oddly shaped presents, with three giant wrapped presents looking suspiciously like a bottle, headphones and a sneaker. After Christmas, the gifts were unwrapped and remain on display for the post-Christmas Sales. I featured the wrapped version here last week.

Newtown, cinema

This former cinema is located King Street in the inner city suburb of Newtown. In the early 1900s the site was occupied by the original Hub Theatre. This art deco-style building operted as a cinema until 1965 when it was converted into a community hall and renamed the Burland Community Hall. From 1986 to 1995 the upper floor of the hall was the Newtown branch library. After the library moved to new premises the building was redeveloped into offices and retail space.

This former corner shop and residence is located on the corner of Forbes Street and Best Street, in the inner city suburb of Woolloomooloo. Along Forbes Street are a number of two storey terrace houses built in the same style.

Wolloomooloo, Finger Wharf

The restored interior of the Wolloomooloo Finger Wharf, located in the eastern suburb of Woolloomooloo. This former wool and cargo dock on Wolloomooloo Bay was built in 1915 and remained part of the working port until the 1970s when container ports and airports reduced the need for wharves. It was restored in the 1990s and redeveloped into a hotel, apartments, commercial offices, restaurants and a marina. This space between industrial conveyor-belt relics is used for functions such as the recent centenary gala dinner and cocktail party.

Woolloomooloo, wharf

The Wolloomooloo Finger Wharf is located in the inner city suburb of Woolloomooloo. It was a working wharf on Wolloomooloo Bay until the 1970s. It was redeveloped in the 1990s into a hotel, apartments, commercial offices, restaurants and a marina. The additional apartments were built at the northern end of the wharf are some of the most expensive in Sydney with the marina along the western wharf for residents.

Sydney Tower

Sydney Tower, the Stockland Piccadilly Complex and the MLC Centre, viewed past a palm tree in Hyde Park South. Sydney Tower is Sydney's tallest structure standing at 309 metres tall. It was completed in 1981 above what was then known as the Centrepoint shopping centre, now Westfield Sydney.

The Galeries, Wrapped

Camperdown, University of Sydney, Statue of Gilgamesh

The Statue of Gilgamesh is located along Western Avenue, on the University of Sydney campus, in the inner city suburb of Camperdown. The 2.5 metre statue was created by Lewis Batros on behalf of the Assyrian community and unveiled in 2000. It depicts the fictional Gilgamesh, king of Uruk and Enkidu from The Epic of Gilgamesh, a poem from ancient Mesopotamia.

George Street, Christmas Tree

This nine metre tall gold and silver bauble Christmas Tree has been installed in the middle of George Street, between King Street and Market Street. The location was only possible because parts of George Street closed for the construction of the city's new light rail link.

The Sydney Harbour Bridge spans Sydney Harbour between Dawes Point and Milsons Point. This view is from the forecourt of the Sydney Opera House which is a prime position for watching the New Year's Eve fireworks display every year.
