Marrickville, police station

This heritage listed building is the former police station in Gladstone Street, in the inner west suburb of Marrickville. This brick building with a sandstone front and slate roof was built in 1896 at a cost of 2,369 pounds. In the early days, it was known as the Marrickville Lock-Up and consisted of six cells, a padded cell, three yards, an Officer in Charge's office, a muster room and a store room. It remained in use until 1997 when a new police station opened in Despointes Street. This building is now the May Murray Neighbourhood Centre which provides community services.

Chester Hill, Nugent Park

These curious structures are located in the middle of Nugent Park, beside the railway station, in the western suburb of Chester Hill. I couldn't find any information about these monuments apart from a local council information sheet on the suburb which reads: Nugent Park serves as a place of remembrance to Australia's fallen as well as a place of rest. Apparently these structures are remnants of slippery slides in a children's playground that were decomissioned for safety reasons and had the metal slide removed.

Anzac Bridge, Rozelle Bay, sunset

This sunset view from the Anzac Bridge over the inner west suburbs of Annandale and Leichhardt is also reflected off Rozelle Bay. This photo was taken a bit further along the bridge from yesterday's sunset shot and a little bit later on when the colours were more vivid.

Woolloomooloo Bay, Queen Mary 2

The Queen Mary 2 is the luxury ocean liner that was berthed at Garden Island dockyard yesterday. This view is from the Woolloomooloo Finger Wharf in Woolloomooloo Bay. It made a grand entrance into Sydney Harbour on Tuesday morning, with its sister ship the Queen Elizabeth. The skies were a glorious blue, compared to the dreary grey skies we had the day before. What a difference a day makes.

Circular Quay, Queen Elizabeth

The Queen Elizabeth is the luxury ocean liner currently berthed at the Overseas Passenger Terminal at Circular Quay. This view is from the viewing platform beside the Cahill Expressway, above Circular Quay railway station. It made quite a spectacle cruising up Sydney Harbour yesterday morning, alongside its sister ship the Queen Mary 2, which is berthed at Garden Island dockyards.

This shop and residential building built in the Federation architecture style is located on the corner of Audley Street and Trafalgar Street, in the inner west suburb of Petersham. It has been used as a church by the Petersham Assembly of God since 1965.

Laiki Bank House, Castlereagh Street, night

 

Laiki Bank House in Castlereagh Street is enhanced by coloured lights reflected off the facade at night. This is a heritage listed building which was once housed the City South Telephone Exchange, built in 1922 and designed by commonwealth architect John Smith Murdoch, in the Commercial Palazzo style. It now houses the Consulate of Greece, as well as a bank branch and the Australian headquarters of Laiki Bank (Popular Bank of Greece).  A daytime view of this building can be seen here.

Westpac Place, barometer

Westpac Place is a 33 storey commercial building on Kent Street, which is the Australian headquarters for Westpac Bank. The roof features a weather beacon barometer inside an illuminated white glass tower. The eight red, light emitting diode (LED), illuminated bars on the north and south faces represent 990 hPa to 1025 hPa, in 5 hPa increments. As pressure rises or falls, the LED  bars ripple in an upward or downward direction to provide real time information on barometric pressure changes. Low pressure usually indicates inclement weather and high pressure usually indcates clear weather. The illumination level of the LED bars and tower is controlled by a roof mounted photosensor, with the brightest levels in the middle of the day, dimming at dusk and reaching the lowest level after dark.

This fountain has been incorporated into the wall of Sydney Wildlife World at Darling Harbour.

Mortdale, Masonic Centre

Woronora Lodge, built in 1922, was the Masonic Temple on Cook Street, in the southern suburb of Mortdale. This is a historical photo now, since the building was demolished recently. Despite protests from the National Trust Register and local residents who wanted to preserve it, the local council decided it had no heritage value and plans to build a car park for the local shopping area on this site.

Hyde Park, Chinese New Year

This giant lantern float was created to celerate the Year of the Rabbit at Lunar New Year celebrations this year. It had been located in Hyde Park to publicise the annual Chinese New Year Twilight Parade, before taking part in the parade last week.

NAB House, pedestrian bridge

This pedestrian bridge provides a link from Grosvenor Street and Lang Street to the Australian Taxation Office on level two of NAB House, an office building of the National Australia Bank. The suspension cables are anchored in this forecourt of Suncorp Place, an adjoining office building of the Suncorp Group, surrounded by plants grown in geometric patterns and a piece of modern sculpture.

Hunters Hill, St Peters Chanel Catholic Church

St Peters Chanel Catholic Church is located along Futuna Street, in the north west suburb of Hunters Hill. This sandstone Gothic style church was built in 1892 is listed on the Register of the National Estate. St. Peter Chanel was a French missionary to the island of Futuna, east of New Caledonia, between Samoa and Fiji. He became the first Marist martyr after the chief ordered his death in 1841 for giving advice which contradicted island culture. His body was brought back to Hunters Hill in Australia but eventually was returned to France for burial. He was canonised in 1954 and then in 1977, his body was taken back to Futuna and permanently buried there.

Hunters Hill, All Saints Anglican Church

All Saints Anglican Church is located on the corner of Ambrose Street and Ferry Street, in the north western suburb of Hunters Hill. This church was designed by John Horbury Hunt in the Gothic Revival style and opened in 1888. This church, now on the Register of National Estate, was unfinished due to the financial situation of the parish. The wooden western end was not replaced until 1938 but the bell tower, spire and porch in the original plans were not buillt.

Hunters Hill, post office

The post office in the northern suburb of Hunters Hill is a heritage building that has been listed on the Register of the National Estate. Located in Alexandra Street, it was built in the 1890s by the government architect Walter Liberty Vernon, in the Queen Anne style.

The Domain, Mobius Sea

Mobius Sea is a sculpture by Richard Goodwin located in the Crescent Precinct of the Domain, near the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Created in 1985, it won the Royal Blind Society's Sculpture Award.

St Marys Road, pedestrian bridge

This pedestrian bridge links the Yurong Water Garden in Cook and Phillip Park with The Domain. It crosses over St Marys Road, at the intersection with Riley Street, Yurong Parkway and Sir John Young Crescent. The apartment blocks and hotels in the distance are located and Kings Cross and the large one on the right is the Horizon Apartments block at Darlinghurst.

Darling Point, yacht club

The Cruising Yacht Club of Australia is located on the shore of Rushcutters Bay, but officially in the eastern suburb of Darling Point. The club is home to the annual Sydney Hobart Yacht Race which begins on Boxing Day. Some terrific reflections in the bay, looking back from the marina.

Kogarah Bay, sunset

The sun setting over Kogarah Bay, earlier this week, viewed from Claydon Reserve at Sans Souci. We've had some really hot days this week with temperatures hitting above 40 degrees celsius in some suburbs. There is barely any relief after the sun sets with temperatures staying above 25 degrees most nights. This heatwave has us on track for recording the hottest week in Sydney, since records began.

Sydney Square, Sydney Living Colour

Sydney Square, between Sydney Town Hall and St Andrews Cathedral, features this floral display which is part of 'Sydney Living Colour'. The theme for these displays throughout the city for Summer 2011 is ‘Live Green’ which focuses on how our lifestyle choices affect the future of our planet. Each display around the city encourages people to adopt sustainable practices. 'Worm Farming' at the front here includes Marigolds, Lavender, Mint, Lettuce and Parsley. 'Community Gardens' seen behind it includes Eggplants, Capsicums, Tomatoes, Silverbeet, Corn, Sunflowers, Chillis, Snowpeas, Pyrethrum, Thyme and Sage. 'Saving Water' further back features a variety of flowers: Dichondra Silver Falls, Celosia Yellow, Salvia Farninacea Blue, Lavender Spanish Eyes and Furcraea Medio-Picta.

Dolans Bay, wharf

Wally's Wharf is the name of this local landmark in the southern suburb of Dolans Bay. The wharf sits on the Port Hacking estuary and is very busy in the summer months. A boatload of locals can be seen here returning from a trip to the beach.

Government House, garden (Theme Day: Fountains)

The fountain in the formal gardens of Government House, surrounded by the Royal Botanic Gardens and looking out towards Sydney Harbour. It was the official residence of 27 Governors from 1846 to 1996. Since then, the Historic Houses Trust has managed Government House as a museum and a 'working State House' with public guided tours, government, community and cultural events taking place there every week.
