The heritage listed Strawberry Hills Hotel is located on the corner of Elizabeth Street and Devonshire Street, in the inner city suburb of Surry Hills. The original hotel was built in 1871 as the Southern Cross Hotel and operated until the 1920s when it underwent major redevelopment in the Inter-War style. In 1954 an application was approved by Sydney City Council to incorporate two adjacent 1880s shops into the hotel. The name change to "Strawberry Hills Hotel" only occurred in more recent years, with the name used as an urban locality taken from the former Strawberry Hills Estate.

A lovely building.
ReplyDeleteIt is a classic!
ReplyDelete1871- never would have guessed. I enjoy seeing these historic buildings.
ReplyDeleteI like that name, Strawberry Hills! It looks like a corner grocery. Or, at least my idea of what a corner grocery would/should look like!
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely building!
ReplyDeleteA lovely structure and great style - Thanks for sharing and for linking up with #MySundaySnapshot.
ReplyDeleteIs there a list of previous owners of the former Southern Cross Hotel?
ReplyDeleteI am trying to ascertain whether my grandfather owned or ran it in 1920.
Hi Dianne, there are some photos and documents online at the Australian National University Open Research Library and the Noel Butlin Archives Centre.
