Sutherland, Woronora cemetery, pergola

The Woronora General Cemetery is located in the southern suburb of Sutherland. This pergola, near the Woronora Crematorium, is one of many found in the landscaped gardens at the cemetery.

Sutherland, Horizon Church

 
The Horizon Church is located on the corner of Stapleton Avenue and Merton Street in the southern suburb of Sutherland. The church was founded as Sutherland Assemblies of God denomination church in 1949. Over the years it has rebranded itself as the Christian Growth Centre, then the Shire Christian Centre and then in 2006 it was Shirelive, a Pentecostal Christian church affiliated with Australian Christian Churches. The church has been at this site since the early 1950s but this convention centre building was built in 2017 featuring an auditorium, offices and a youth centre.

Sutherland, sculpture

This sculpture is located in the middle of Peace Park, in the southern suburb of Sutherland. It consists of a forest of animated totems in the children's play area with dynamic bush and beach motifs of the district.

Sutherland, war memorial

This war memorial is located along Eton Street in the southern suburb of Sutherland, near Peace Park and the Pavilion Performing Arts Centre. The stone obelisk which was originally erected to commemorate those from the district who served in World War One and stood at the end of the road. It was relocated here in 1992 and now commemorates men and women from the Sutherland Shire who have served in all the conflicts in which Australia has been involved.

Sutherland, shops


This commercial development faces Old Princes Highway and backs onto Eton Street, in the southern suburb of Sutherland. Although this is not a heritage building, it was designed to look like other historic buildings in the area. This is a historic photo too since it was taken in 2006 and the property management agent tenants have since moved out.

Sutherland, Pavilion Performing Arts Centre (Theme Day: Glass)


The Pavilion Performing Arts Centre is located along Eton Street, in the southern suburb of Sutherland. The original Entertainment Centre building was designed and built in the 1970s but it was redeveloped in 2023. The redevelopment is composed of a grid of mass laminated timber and glass, designed by Chrofi and NBRS.

Sutherland, Entertainment Centre


The Sutherland Entertainment Centre is located along Eton Street, the southern suburb of Sutherland. It was designed and built in the 1970s as a multi-purpose venue used for exhibitions, conferences, presentations, dinners, product launches, community and professional theatre and concerts. This is a heritage photo from 2007 before the building was redeveloped in 2023. I will share a photo of the redeveloped building tomorrow.

Sutherland, council chambers


The Sutherland Shire council chambers is located along Eton Street, in the southern suburb of Sutherland. The council is displaying a Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks banner, supporting the local rugby league club which is currently playing in the national rugby league (NRL) finals.

Chuo City Garden is located in Peace Park along Eton Street, in the southern suburb of Sutherland. is a Japanese-style garden, named after the sister city of the Sutherland Shire, which opened in 1993.

Sutherland, Woronora Cemetery, Stations of the Cross

The “Stations of the Cross” monument was installed in 2012 at Woronora General Cemetery,  in the southern suburb of Sutherland. The sculpture behind this information board is similar to the fourteen sculptures carved from single granite blocks. They feature a series of scenes that depict Christ’s final hours before the Crucifixion. Special devotions have been written to commemorate each of the Stations and the faithful are invited to walk clockwise to each Station, reflecting as they progress. The “Resurrection of Christ” statue has been placed in the centre with each Station symbolically looking inwards.

The Woronora General Cemetery is located in the southern suburb of Sutherland. This pergola, near the Woronora Crematorium, is one of many found in the landscaped gardens at the cemetery. The cemetery opened in 1895 with a special branch railway line bringing funerals to the cemetery.

This heritage-listed house is on Linden Street, in the southern suburb of Sutherland. Located opposite Woronora Cemetery, it now houses Heritage Memorials, a stonemason's office and showroom for grave memorials.

Sutherland, Woronora Cemetery, monument

This monument stands in the Catholic section of the Woronora General Cemetery, in the southern suburb of Sutherland. Located at the end of a pathway leading from the “Resurrection of Christ” statue, is this pool and empty white cross with a dove carrying an olive leaf, symbolic of hope and the Holy Spirit.

Sutherland, Woronora Cemetery, statue

The "Resurrection of Jesus" is a statue which stands in the Catholic section of the Woronora General Cemetery, in the southern suburb of Sutherland. This 3 metre tall statue which weighs 3.5 tonnes was installed in 2012 as part of a "Stations of the Cross" monument. It has been placed in water, symbolic of Christ's life giving message: "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life."

Sutherland, Woronora Crematorium

The Woronora Crematorium is located in the Woronora General Cemetery, in the southern suburb of Sutherland. This heritage listed building features the West Chapel and the South Chapel and is surrounded by memorial gardens. It was designed by architect Louis Robertson in the art deco architectural style and was completed in 1934.

Sutherland, Woronora Cemetery

Woronora Cemetery and Crematorium is located in the southern suburb of Sutherland. Woronora became a general cemetery in 1895 on land that was formerly a brickworks. This stainless steel sculpture on a granite plinth is a simple armillary sphere. It stands on the side of the road, near a bus stop, in the middle of the cemetery.
