Parramatta River, Altitude Tower

An afternoon view up the Parramatta River from the Elizabeth Street Bridge, in the western suburb of Parramatta. Altitude Tower is a 54 level apartment building along Church Street, built in 2017 and Meriton Suites is a 36 storey hotel standing beside it, built​ in 2016.

Parramatta River, John Whitton Bridge

A ferry on the Parramatta River has just departed the Olympic Park Wharf and is heading past navigation marks towards the John Whitton Bridge.

Parramatta, Elizabeth Street Bridge

The Elizabeth Street Bridge crosses the Parramatta River between Elizabeth Street and Phillip Street, in the western suburb of Parramatta. It was originally a narrower bridge carrying pipes across the river which was replaced in 2003 with this pedestrian and cycle bridge. 'Wake' is a sculpture which adorns the bridge created by artists Susan Milne and Greg Stonehouse.

Parramatta, ferry wharf

A ferry approaches the Charles Street ferry wharf in the western suburb of Parramatta. The Evonne Goolagong is a Sydney RiverCats class of catamaran operated by Harbour City Ferries on the Parramatta River from Circular Quay to Parramatta.

Parramatta, Boer War Memorial

The Boer War Memorial is located in Parramatta Park, in the western suburb of Parramatta. It commemorates Australian participation in the Boer War when volunteer Lancers were the first Australian troops to arrive in South Africa in 1899. The memorial was erected in 1904 using four Doric columns, the entablature blocks and the cornice from the former Parramatta Courthouse, designed by Mortimer Lewis in 1837. In the centre of the memorial, a broken pillar signifies "life broken short" to remember the lives lost in the war. The cannon on top of the memorial made by Cornelius King in 1822 was one of six nine-pounder field guns used for the defence of Port Jackson at Dawes Point, as were the two Georgian cannons on either side.

Parramatta, St Patrick's Cathedral

St Patrick's Cathedral is located on the corner of Marist Place and Victoria Road, in the western suburb of Parramatta. This heritage listed Catholic church was designed by James Houison and built in 1853 in the Victorian Gothic stone church reusing stone and many elements of an earlier church on the site. The tower and spire were added to the church in 1878 and 1883. The church was demolished and rebuilt in 1936 and again in 1996 after it was gutted by fire.

Parramatta, Noller Bridge

Noller Bridge is a footbridge over the Parramatta River, in the western suburb of Parramatta. It links historic Parramatta Park to the Parramatta central business district, which has many high rise office buildings and apartments.

Parramatta, obelisk

This obelisk was erected in Parramatta Park in 1890 to mark the location of an astronomical observatory that once stood here. According to the inscription, Parramatta Observatory was founded in 1822 by Sir Thomas Makdougall Brisbane, Governor of New South Wales. The transit stones, which remain in their original location, formed a stable base for the transit instrument – a telescope that moved on a north south axis which was used to measure longitude and the exact positions of the stars. In 1828, Surveyor Thomas Mitchell used these stones as a meridian mark for the first trigonometric survey of Australia. The observatory was closed in 1848 and the building was demolished in 1876 after it became dilapidated.

Parramatta, The Bath House

The Bath House is a historic structure in Parramatta Park, in the western suburb of Parramatta. It was designed by Colonial Architect S. L. Harris and built in 1823 for Governor Thomas Brisbane. Water was pumped into it from the nearby river, while used water was run off into a nearby duck pond. In 1886, the bath house was converted to a pavillion for picnics or as a bandstand. Unfortunately the domes and turret were removed at this time.

Parramatta, Prince Alfred Park, rotunda

This rotunda is located in Prince Alfred Park, in the western suburb of Parramatta. This 1.6 hectare park was originally the site of Australia’s first gaol which was completed in 1797. The park honours Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, who was the second son of Queen Victoria and the first British monarch to visit Australia in 1867-68. On his second, whilst picnicking in the beachfront suburb of Clontarf on the 12 March 1868, he was wounded in the back by a revolver fired by Henry James O'Farrell.

Parramatta, Gollan Memorial Clock Tower

This sandstone clock tower is located in Prince Alfred Park, in the western suburb of Parramatta. The park honours Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, who was the second son of Queen Victoria. The Gollan Memorial Clock Tower was erected in 1954 to commemorate the services to the district of the Honourable G C Gollan, Member of the Legislative Assembly and former cabinet minister.

Buttons Bridge crosses the Parramatta River, in the western suburb of Parramatta. This pedestrian bridge was built in 1931 and links historic Parramatta Park to the central business district of Parramatta.

Parramatta, Sentry Box

This contemporary artwork is located on the Parramatta River foreshore, near the Gasworks Bridge, in the western suburb of Parramatta. “Sentry Box” was created by historian Michael Flynn with artists Susan Milne and Greg Stonehouse in 2009. This 8-metre high sculpture is a reinterpretation of a small wooden sentry box which stood near this location, in the early days of the colony. The red coat soldiers were stationed on the river at the entry to Parramatta where they watched over the river and were responsible for keeping order and disciplining convicts.

Parramatta, Gasworks Bridge

The Gasworks Bridge carries Macarthur Street over the Parramatta River in the western suburb of Parramatta. This iron lattice bridge on sandstone pylons was completed in 1885 and acquired the name due to the proximity of the gasworks that once occupied the block southeast of the bridge. The south side of the bridge was the site of Howell's wind and watermill, built in 1828 and used until 1868.

Parramatta, ferry wharf

The Charles Street ferry wharf, on the southern side of the Parramatta River, serves the western suburb of Parramatta. A regular service is provided by RiverCat ferries on the Parramatta River route between here and Circular Quay. It is the farthest point of travel for Sydney Ferries on the river route, since a weir next to it prevents further travel upstream.
