Surry Hills, shop and apartments

This apartment building with a shop on the ground floor is located on the corner of Elizabeth Street and Rutland Street, in the inner city suburb of Surry Hills. The original three storey building on this corner was demolished in 2016 but rebuilt in the same historic style with a two storey contemporary style addition above. A separate contemporay addition was also made behind it along Rutland Street. The two storey terrace houses along Elizabeth were also redeveloped with three storeys of apartments added above.

Surry Hills, St Sophia Greek Orthodox Church

St Sophia Greek Orthodox Church is located along Bourke Street, in the inner city suburb of Surry Hills. This heritage listed church was originally built as a Congregational Church known as St Sophia and Her Three Daughters. It was designed by William Boles and built in 1880 in the Victorian Gothic style.

Surry Hills, art

 
This artwork is on the side and back walls of The Colourful House of Surry Hills, a former warehouse along South Dowling Street beside Wimbo Park, in the inner city suburb of Surry Hills. It was created in 2018 by street artist Thierry Noir. The warehouse was converted into a single private residence by businessman John Winning, owner of an appliances business. His close friend, American techno DJ Seth Troxler commissioned the artwork which covers the whole building.

A tram makes its way past a corner shop on the corner of Devoshire Street and Crown Street, in the inner city suburb of Surry Hills. The CBD and South East Light Rail Service runs along Devonshire Street with trams on the L2 Randwick Light Rail line and L3 Kingsford Light Rail line from Circular Quay via Central. The Victorian style building is now used as a laundry and dry cleaner below and office space above.

Surry Hills, Dove & Olive

The Dove & Olive is a pub located on the corner of Devonshire Street and Waterloo Street, in the inner city suburb of Surry Hills. This heritage listed building was built in 1876 in the Victorian Style and was formerly known as the Clarendon Hotel.

The Madison Hotel, built in the Inter-War Style, is located on the corner of Devonshire Street and Randle Street, in the inner city suburb of Surry Hills. The CBD and South East Light Rail Service runs along Devonshire Street with trams on the L2 Randwick Light Rail line and L3 Kingsford Light Rail line from Circular Quay via Central.

Surry Hills, Ibero - American Plaza

The Ibero - American Plaza is located along Chalmers Street, in the inner city suburb of Surry Hills. This site was founded in 1989 to commemorate the contribution of Spanish and Portugese speaking people to Australia. It features a series of 11 busts and 2 statues representing significant historical figures and national heroes donated by nations including Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru, the Philippines, Portugal, Spain, Uruguay and Venezuela.

Surry Hills, Evening Star Hotel

 

The Evening Star Hotel is located on the corner of Elizabeth Street and Cooper Street, in the inner city suburb of Surry Hills. The heritage listed pub was built in 1903 in the Federation Anglo-Dutch style replacing a hotel of the same name which had been constructed on the site prior to 1885.

The Central Chalmers Street Light Rail Stop is located along Chalmers Street, beside Central Railway Station. It is part of the CBD and South East Light Rail Service, made up of the L2 Randwick Light Rail line and L3 Kingsford Light Rail line which run from Circular Quay. A Tangara or T set train can be seen departing the railway station.

This Victorian style building is now used as a laundry and dry cleaner below and office space above but it had previously been home to a beautician as seen here.

Surry Hills, Strawberry Hills Hotel

The heritage listed Strawberry Hills Hotel is located on the corner of Elizabeth Street and Devonshire Street, in the inner city suburb of Surry Hills. The original hotel was built in 1871 as the Southern Cross Hotel and operated until the 1920s when it underwent major redevelopment in the Inter-War style. In 1954 an application was approved by Sydney City Council to incorporate two adjacent 1880s shops into the hotel. The name change to "Strawberry Hills Hotel" only occurred in more recent years, with the name used as an urban locality taken from the former Strawberry Hills Estate.

Surry Hills, Bourke Street Bakery (Theme Day: Comfort Food)

Bourke Street Bakery is on the corner of Bourke Street and Devonshire Street, in the inner city suburb of Surry Hills. This bakery and cake shop opened in 2004 and has now successfully expanded to twelve locations in Sydney. Since 2019, it has also opened in five locations in New York City. They serve artisan breads, meat pies, sausage rolls, quiches, biscuits, cakes, fresh sandwiches and salads. The side of this shop features a giant mural of a baker.

Surry Hills, office

This residential building is located on the corner of Devonshire Street and Wilshire Street, in the inner city suburb of Surry Hills. It is the former office of Brackenbury & Austin Pty. Ltd, a machine tools factory next door. Both were redeveloped in 2020 into modern apartments with the Brackenbury & Austin script left on the facade of the office.

Surry Hills, light rail stop (Theme Day: Road)

The Surry Hills Light Rail Stop is located along Devonshire Street, in the inner city suburb of Surry Hills. It is part of the CBD and South East Light Rail Service, made up of the L2 Randwick Light Rail line and L3 Kingsford Light Rail line which run from Circular Quay. The light rail line has taken over this road with only one lane on the left reserved for traffic now.

Surry Hills, mural

This mural is on the side of a shop on the corner of Crown Street and Foveaux Street, in the inner city suburb of Surry Hills. It features former Australian Rules footballer Adam Goodes, who played for the Sydney Swans and was twice awarded the Brownlow Medal, the game's most prestigious award. The mural was painted in 2020 by Hamish McBride, Laura Paige, Megan Hales, Jacqueline Butterworth and Kailin Hegel.

This mural is painted on the side wall of a clinic located along South Dowling Street, in the inner city suburb of Surry Hills. It was painted in 2018 by street artist Thierry Noir, who has also created The Colourful House of Surry Hills, located on the opposite side of the light rail line.

Surry Hills, Prince Alfred Park, rainbow walkway (Theme Day: Solitude)

 

A solitary man walks along the rainbow walkway in Prince Alfred Park, in the inner city suburb of Surry Hills. It was installed in 2021 as a reminder both for how far the LGBTQI+ community has come and how far it has to go. The building behind it is Inner Sydney High School which opened in 2021 on the former site of Cleveland Street High School.
